Etymology

Yami is Gurennese for darkness.

History

Introduction

It was introduced as a result of the Gurennese Industrial Revolution on August 28, 1900.

Coins

Coins were introduced in 1900. There were silver 5, 10, 20 and 50 sami and 1 yami, and gold 2, 5, 10 and 20 yami. Gold 1 yami were introduced in 1901, followed by copper 1 romi, ½, 1 and 2 sami in 1903.

Banknotes

The issuance of the yami banknotes began in 1902, two years after the currency was introduced. Throughout its history, the denominations have ranged from 10 sami to 10,000 yami.

Determinants of value

The relative value of the yami is determined in foreign exchange markets by the economic forces of supply and demand. The supply of the yami in the market is governed by the desire of yami holders to exchange their yami for other currencies to purchase goods, services, or assets. The demand for the yami is governed by the desire of foreigners to buy goods and services in Gurenn and by their interest in investing in Gurenn (buying yami-denominated real and financial assets).
