History
Ancient Times
Verussa was named after a warrior queen who was know for her skill in archery. It is believed that Verussa became a city sometime around 2,001 B.C., becoming a major argicultural and timber center.
Around 1522 B.C., the city-states of Celiam, Esnah, Evdokena, and Cadsedd formed an alliance and united the other city-states, ruling the region of Vulshain for many years. However, tension between them shattered the City-State Alliance around 523 B.C., which resulted in the Second Time of Great Perils, which would last until 150 A.D.
Wars of the Feuding Cities
Celiam was ruled by the Marquis-Boyer of the Marches of Celiam. Celiam was one of the few city-state kingdoms who sought to keep Vulshain from falling into civil war. Celiam joined several other city-state kingdoms in the Vulshite Union led by King Jorkett Karabe VI of Velra.
Later Years
After the reduction of Celiam to a royal province, Verussa became a major meeting place for philosophers and doctors. Verussa soon became the starting point for the birth of Celiam Methodism after Lso Rostislanasiy started the movement in the early 1800s. After the founding of Celiam Methodism, many Celiam Methodist churches and cathedrals were built, including the Grand Celiam Methodist Cathedral, where Lso was buried after his death in 1862.
A railway was built in 1845, connecting the city to several seaports along the Vulshainian coast, allowing for quick transport of crops and timber.
The city was severely damaged during the Monarchical Revolution after Republican Regime soldiers set fire to several parts of the city in 1977 as part of a scorched earth tactic. Luckily, much of the historical parts of the city were spared the blaze. The city quickly rebuilt itself.
Recent Years
Verussa was spared much of the 2003-2006 Vulshainian Civil War. However, a suicide bomb attempt failed when a terrorist attempted to kill herself and damage the Royal Confederate Police Academy. The bomb failed to detonate and the bomber was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment.
Verussa continues to prosper, thanks to the argicultural and tourism industries. The timber industry is still present, but current laws require the timber industry to plant new trees to replace the ones that are cut down.
The City Itself
Verussa is a city known for its religious sites, as well as other historical buildings like the Castle of the Marches, which has become one of the private residences of the Monarch of Vulshain.
The city is also home to some of the first Methodist churches in Vulshain such as St. John's Methodist Church.
The city has become well-known for being a very ecologically aware city. Differently colored bags are used in recycling different types of household waste, and the appropriate bags must be taken to the right municipal collection center. In fact, the city's waste disposal teams will often refuse to take waste that is in wrong bag or container. Many Verussians will often comment on foreigners not quickly adopting this part of living in Verussa.
The city is very tough on crime as well. This is no surprise as the Royal Confederate Police Academy is located here, and is where the Confederate Protection Guards, the Royal Secret Service of Vulshain is trained.
The Forests of Verussa are a popular tourist attraction as they attract bird watchers and nature lovers every year. The Forests of Verussa also have three cycling and walking trails. Lake Guanennes near the Forests of Verussa is also popular with sunbathers and swimmers.
The Park of Culture and Relaxation is a famous botanical garden in Verussa and is visited by tourists every year.
Verussians
The Verussians are very friendly and tolerant of others, but they are known for their strong eco-friendly attitudes. It is quite common to also hear Verussians having fierce debates with each other. These aren't angry arguments, but are actually very popular forms of debates between friends and students. This stems from the city's historical past where philosophers would debate in loud voices so to be heard. The loud debating would sometimes attract other philosophers to join in the philosophical yelling.
Verussians are very tolerant of members of other faiths and ethnic groups. Police are very diligent in cracking down on crime. The city's law enforcement has proven to be a huge thorn in the sides of many criminal organizations who have attempted and failed to set up a foothold in Verussia. Police officers are always friendly and will be happy to help with your problems, be it a stolen wallet, a lost child, or simply trying to find the nearest restaurant.
