The Verhagen class corvette is a small warship under use in the Brachyurian Navy. It was first built in the mid-1960s but remained in use up until the present day through extensive upgrading. Though poor showing in active war almost immediately after it's commission nearly cancelled the class, changes to faulty designs took place in the late 1980s that led to it being kept on.
Out of 70 vessels constructed, 16 have been lost due to enemy engagements, either due to outright sinking, or being retired as a result of sustaining damage to a degree that would make repairs uneconomical. Current remaining versions of the Verhagen have been upgraded to a modern standard of naval technology, following a large scale attempt to modernise the Brachyurian fleet in the past decade.
The class is named after 20th century Brachyurian Admiral Chester Verhagen, who died on the year the class finished construction.
Deployment
The first Verhagen, named the HMS Tin, was launched on February the 22nd, 1965. It went into the Geraldric Grand Fleet, and was followed by 18 more. The other grand fleets also received 17 ships each. In the 1968 Harbinger Incident, Verhagens within the Mictyric grand fleet, engaged Fasdian warships in a short battle located in the Ravenessian Sounds, losing 7 corvettes to enemy fire. Later joined by the Luxorhynchovic grand fleet, Verhagens then fought in the Battle of Arteska, and between them lost 7 more of the class.
In 2009's Democratic Army Conflict, the invasion of Barrettstia was aided by the Geraldric, Helic and Luxorhynchovic grand fleets, while the Mictyric grand fleet was sent down to the Vexarian Gulf to held defend Fasdian military convoys against interdiction by Norheimeric and Closian forces. In a costly attempt to blockade the city of Norheim, Verhagens in the Mictyric fleet took some damage, with one ship sunk. Naval battles with the Democrat forces in the Chevkor Sea near Barrettstia, left another ship crippled, which was scuttled after the battle.
Armament
The Verhagen lacks the vertical launching systems prevalent in the Brachyurian fleet, instead using individual launchers located entirely on the outside deck of the ship. The offensive capability of the Verhagen is 2 "Red Arrow" Anti-ship missiles and an individual missile launching platform, armed with 8 of the "Asunder" short range SAM missiles. The corvette also has a"Deep Claw" ASW launcher, equipped with 4 multi-purpose launching tubes able to fire either depth charges or small torpedoes. Several smaller calibre guns are found in various points throughout the ship. 5 points along the ship's outer deck are fitted for easy firing positions for the ship's HG66 machine guns, and 2 swivelling open emplacements at strategic positions were armed with a system of 4 tandem-firing 25mm Autocannons. The Verhagen's largest calibre conventional armament is a single 40mm Naval gun, housed in a shielded turret facing the bow.
