The Empire of Triuvia is a nation in New Warsaw Pact. It is among the oldest nations in New Warsaw Pact, but has so far avoided any major involvement in regional affairs. Triuvia's 'official' classifications change frequently; it is often listed as a 'corporate police state' or 'compulsory consumerist state', but in fact Triuvia is a feudal oligarchy, with many similarities to late-serfdom-era Imperial Russia. It is a politically and socially backwards nation; it has managed to repress all attempts at reform or revolution and as such is something of an international pariah, though by all accounts the nation's ruling class prefers it that way. In particular, Triuvia holds old and deeply-held grudges against Aezakmi and Haralkia. Perhaps Triuvia's most distinguishing feature is its vast social inequality; the lower classes earn almost nothing, suffer widespread illiteracy and bad health, and are almost all practically slaves, while members of the ruling class are individually wealthier and more powerful than the governments of many countries.

History

Triuvia, as a political entity, has existed for centuries. The Empire of Triuvia dates back to the year 804, and while the cynical-minded might suggest that nothing much has changed since then, the country was not always so backward, even within the scope of relatively modern history. Triuvian history is punctuated by monarchs who have attempted to modernise their country, with greater or (usually) lesser success, most recently Emperor Kiranjaya III. Under his idiosyncratic rule, Kiranjaya III managed to subdue the power of the aristocracy sufficiently to consolidate and modernise the various Triuvian militaries into one 'Grand Army of Triuvia', with which he launched a massive, meticulously planned but ultimately disastrous campaign of conquest against Triuvia's ancient enemies, Aezakmi and Haralkia. The fall of Kiranjaya III marked the beginning of a sharp increase in the power of the aristocracy, and the decisive ending of any progress Triuvia might have made toward a more 'enlightened' social hierarchy.

Society and Politics

A great majority of Triuvians live in high-density slum housing
Triuvia is, by the standards of the modern developed world, a backward country. By almost any objective metric it is an extremely unpleasant place to live, unless one happens to be among the tiny but absurdly powerful ruling elite, in which case one can live a life of vast opulence that would make the Sun King of France look like a tramp. In many respects it is hardly a country at all; the Emperor is head of the vast and complex Triuvian religion, and the Triuvian nobility must swear loyalty to the crown, but beyond that the country is more or less a collection of large feudal fiefdoms. It is also, technically, in an almost constant state of civil war - small rebellions flare up on almost a weekly basis. There is not even an official 'Triuvian' language; a few days' walk for the average peasant will take him far enough to barely understand the local dialect.

In theory, Triuvia is an absolute monarchy, and the Emperor's word is law. In practice, though, Triuvia's aristocracy holds a significant degree of political influence. One of the main reasons for Triuvia's social backwardness is the aristocracy's swift quashing of any attempt at reform on the part of the monarch.

Foreign Relations and Military

The Triuvian government is notoriously xenophobic toward more socially progressive nations, and since almost all nations are more socially progressive than Triuvia it is quite an isolationist state. The Triuvian leadership particularly avoids close relations with nations 'ruled by the rabble', and goes to some pains to prevent such subversive ideas infecting the Triuvian general population.

The Triuvian military is another antiquated oddity in the modern world. There is no 'Triuvian Army' in the normal sense - most of Triuvia's forces consist of private armies raised, equipped, administrated and owned by various Triuvian nobles. In theory, all of these armies are under the command of the Emperor, and while this is generally the case, the actual owners of the armies have a lot of functional independence. Attempts have been made to standardise the military and centralise its command under the crown; the last notable attempt was during the 'Second Cataclysm' in the 1920's, when the Emperor's centralised 'Grand Army' attempted an invasion of Aezakmi. It was a disastrous failure, and some historians have since suggested that afterwards, Aezakmi collaborated with the Triuvian aristocracy to ensure that Triuvia would never have a 'Grand Army' again.

Geography

Triuvia is a relatively large and mountainous country, with climates ranging from sub-tropical jungle forests in the north to ice-covered mountains in the south. Like its neighbouring continent of Aezakmi, the Triuvian continent is divided roughly down the centre by a 'spine' of high mountain ranges.

Economy

In terms of pure production, the Triuvian economy is quite powerful. The almost complete lack of a native wealthy consumer base has, however, made the Triuvian economy heavily dependent upon exports to maintain its primary and secondary industries. That the averaged Triuvian GDP-per-capita is so relatively high is merely a testament to the truly colossal wealth of the top 1% of the population; for the majority a subsistence living is the best they can hope for. The main areas of employment in Triuvia are agriculture and factory work: in both sectors labour-saving modernisation is uncommon and the work remains very labour intensive - it is simply cheaper for most farm or factory owners to use hundreds of workers rather than invest in automated systems.

Such a vast supply of cheap and more-or-less expendable labour in Triuvia has led to the growth of many otherwise-unprofitable industries; Triuvia's recycling yards, for example, import hundreds of thousands of tons of garbage from many nations around the world, and 'hand crafted' goods, such as clothes and furniture, are significant Triuvian exports.

Out-of-Character Note

Triuvia is a 'puppet nation' to Aezakmi. However for all IC purposes, Triuvia is independent of Aezakmi (in fact, they hate each other); they are merely owned OOC by the same person.
