Swimming at the Fifth Summer Olympics was held over the course of twenty-five days, starting on July 13, and ending with the womens's 10,000m marathon on August 7. In a change from the last Olympics to bring the event in line with FINA rules times would only be measured to the nearest one-hundredth of a second, and therefore athletes with the same time would share the postition, and if in a medal postition they would share the medal.
