Government
Sportgirls is a parliamentary monarchy.
The Queen
Succession to the throne is strictly matrilineal, following the principles of primogeniture but applying them to women instead of men. Should the line ever fail, a new queen would be selected by and from the House of Nobility.
Queens of Sportgirls
- Margareta, born 1875, crowned 1906, died 1934.
- Stefania, born 1897, crowned 1934, died 1966.
- Kirsten, born 1916, crowned 1966, died 1984.
- Ingebjørg, born 1937, crowned 1984, died 2008.
- Kirsten II, born 1982, crowned 2008.
The heir to the throne is Princess Dana Elizabeth, born 2011.
The peerage
The Queen may create life peerages for up to 21 citizens at any given time, styling them at the pleasure of the Crown. These peers form the upper house of parliament, the House of Nobility.
The House of the People
The citizenry elect representatives to the House of the People using a proportional representation system. Fourteen members are elected each year to a seven-year term, for a total of 98 members. No person can ever serve more than one term in the House of the People.
Composition of the House of the People
The current government is led by an uneasy coalition of the Christian Democrats and the Prosperity party.
- Christian Democrats - 41
- Socialist Workers - 23
- Peace and Freedom - 12
- Prosperity - 11
- National - 6
- Anti-Monarchist - 3
- Reform Now! - 1
- New Democratic - 1
Nationality
Sportgirls nationality may be acquired in three ways:
- From birth to a Sportgirls citizen.
- For men only, by marriage to a citizen or national. Such nationality can be revoked should the marriage fail before seven years have elapsed; this is not automatic.
- Both men and women foreign nationals may apply to the Queen through the Foreign Ministry for a grant of nationality. An average of 9-12 such grants are made in a typical year. Application for or receipt of a grant does not affect other citizenships or nationalities held, but it is expected that a compelling reason will be put forth in the application.
Citizenship
Citizenship is limited to women, more specifically to mothers. Any Sportgirls national who gives birth becomes a citizen from that moment. A mother who is granted nationality by the queen also becomes a citizen with the grant.
Citizens have certain privileges that nationals do not. Only citizens may vote or hold elective office. The peerage and certain commissioned posts also require citizenship, including military officers, police commanders, and all judges and barristers.
Sport
National All-Sport Team
Sportgirls made its international sporting debut in World Cup 49. It was then noted for having a single national sports team of multi-dimensional athletes who represented the nation in all sports fielding an official national team. The 24 women on the squad were under two-year, full-time, exclusive contracts to the Ministry of Sport, with eleven athletes selected as a starting eleven in football and thirteen others as a starting lineup, DH, three starting pitchers and a closer in baseball. All team members cross-trained in these sports and any others requested.
Despite the success of football defender Megan Sullivan as a speedskater, taking bronze in the Sao Jorge Olympics at 1000m, the experiment was abandoned for a time in favour of concentration on domestic football through the Sportgirls National League.
Thanks to sponsorship by former team member Caitlyn Ballantyne and a renewed interest from Her Majesty, the all-sport team has been rebuilt. The second version has 25 women and is built around six sports. Its primary sports are association football, netball, and rugby sevens, and its secondary sports are baseball, gateball, and volleyball.
Sportgirls National League
The domestic professional football league, the Sportgirls National League, was founded with five teams (later expanded to seven) representing different districts of the nation. All seven teams play at Queen Ingebjørg Stadium in the city centre.
North Ward has been the most successful team in SNL history. The other six sides are Armoury, Bridgeview, Commercial, Greenfield, Harbour Town, and Palace.
