The Seglish Republic (pronounced /seɪglænd/) or Segland is a relatively small nation in the region of Esquarium. It is in very close proximity to the nation of Zerkistan. Segland is comprised of seven provinces, and it borders the North Mozzas Sea.
The Seglish Republic is a parliamentary democracy. It is also a devolved state. The nation's Parliament is located in the capital city of Ryutsvaag. The provinces are divided into districts.
Segland's rich history began in 1732 when Katharan explorers colonized the newly-found continent, named after King Segward III of Kathara. When the Katharan Empire was dissolved in 1814, many former constituent republics declared sovereignty. Segland was one of them. A dictatorship nearly gained control of Segland in 1920, but the republic continued.
The Seglish Republic is a developed nation with one of the highest nominal GDP in the region. The Republic is a major power in terms of regional influence.

History

The area which is now Segland was uninhabited until Katharan explorers found and colonized it in the year 1732. The explorers named the place after King Segward III of Kathara. A settlement was established a few miles inland, and it went by the name of Prudhomme. The people living in Prudhomme mysteriously disappeared in 1743. Speculations as to why they disappeared have ranged from disease to alien abduction. A new town called Ryutsvaag was founded in 1745, and it prospered as the largest town in Segland at 32,000. It was named after Ryuts, the capital of the Katharan mainland. By 1750 it had reached a population of over 75,000. Its growth continued.
In 1789, a controversial law was issued by King James XI which imposed a tax upon fruit and all byproducts thereof. Widespread opposition led to the tax's repeal in 1791. In 1796, the Katharan Empire declared war on the neighboring nation, the Sultanate of Bojoa. The Bojoans had a superior economy and knowledge of technology, and this led to their victory in 1807. The war lasted 11 years, with Kathara putting up quite a fight. At first, Kathara was successful, but the tide turned in 1803 at the Second Battle of Ryuts. The capital was burned to the ground, and Bojoa occupied it. The government was relocated to the city of Hannoversburg in northwestern Kathara. The last major battle, the Siege of Tankata, occurred in 1805. King James XII finally surrendered to the Bojoan sultan in February 1807. He ceded all of eastern Kathara to Bojoa.
The Empire never recovered from the war, and it was eventually dissolved on May 12, 1814. The Republic of Segland was formed from most of the old Seglish colony on May 15, 1814. Ryutsvaag was declared capital of the new democracy, and Lamar Weide was elected the first president in 1815 after almost about nine months of transitional government. He approved the Chastyk Constitution in 1817 and was reelected in 1820. In 1834, President Genin Clark granted an eastern portion of the country independence as Zerkistan. The cultural divide between Zerkistan and Segland had become too obvious to be unified as one nation anymore. However, both nations maintained a strong alliance and sense of kinship. The invention of the Morse telegraph in 1837 brought a communication revolution to Segland, making it possible to more easily connect with friends and family across the nation. Overland telegraph cables had completely connected the nation by March 1, 1841.
The island of Sovorro was acquired as a territory in 1847. In 1857, miners struck copper in the Govachian Mountains which led to a huge copper rush, and towns in the area prospered for years to come. The amounts of ore were incredible. The excitement had died down by 1877 when Segland adopted the salface as its national currency. It replaced the old kruzi. Sovorro led an uprising in 1890, demanding independence. President Naphtali Olen met their demands, which some criticized as cowardice. Most people, though, felt that he was simply trying to preserve the pacifist tendencies of Segland.
The industrial revolution affected Segland in the late 1800s and early 1900s, improving the economy and creating new jobs in the industry sector. The invention of the automobile caused Parliament to introduce a bill to repave and improve quality of roads. It was approved. In 1920, Papuz Grenartia declared himself president of Segland and gathered supporters. The president at that time, Robert Wayne, fled Ryutsvaag in order to escape the wrath of Grenartia. The newly proclaimed president ruled in a de facto dictatorship for two weeks until he was displaced in a peaceful revolution. Order was restored, and Wayne returned to Segland to be president until he died in office three months later.
The 1930s and 40s marked technological advances in Segland, such as the introduction of the early computer and the television. Radio hit peak popularity in the late 1940s, and TV was mainstream by the end of 1960. Rock n' roll bands like Radioactive Anaconda became popular in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Social progressions were headed by President Anthony Kuchawa in the early 2000s, such as the legalization of gay marriage.
2009 and 2010 were horrible years for the republic, as numerous terrorist attacks occurred in this time. The most infamous example was the chemical pollution of Parliament on November 29, 2009. Thirty-two members of Parliament were killed when three grenades went off in the Complex Parliament, releasing poisonous chemicals. The Seglish Nationalist Army claimed responsibility for the attacks. It was a far-right terrorist group that had been operating since 1998.
Today, Segland is a model nation, and is extremely prosperous. It is a social democracy that has been maintaining human rights and peace since its independence, and quality of life is high as well, with an HDI of 0.983.

Many people assume that people from Segland are called Seglanders or Seglandic people, but actually, they are called Seglish people.

Segland is a melting pot of many races, and looking at the Censuses will prove it. Lots of races keeps racial discrimination from occuring, and that leads to apartheid, which is not even allowed in Segland. All the different cultures create the exciting, lively Seglish way of life, not found anywhere else in the world.

Languages
During Russian rule, Russian became the primary language of Segland. Even today, many Seglish people speak Russian and most know it as a second language. When Segland gained independance in 1835, many English people came to Segland. Slowly, English became a major language. But in the late 1800s, the Crizostani language evolved, and it became the main language of Segland by 1906

Education is the third-highest priority on the government spending list, taking some 12% of the government budget, and this is shown in the high literacy rate of the Seglish people.

Segland is a Democratic Republic in which the President is the head of state and the Prime Minister is the head of government. The Oskarov is the national legislature of Segland, and is in a several-party system where Executive, Legislative, and Judicial powers are considered equal and not one has more power than another.

In 1838, 3 years after independance, the Seglish people expressed a need for a national parliament. President Boris Mushchenko decided that the people were right, and he created the Oskarov, or People's Government. The Conservative Party merged with the Nationalist Party in 1995 and won 58 seats in Parliament, a majority.

For a while, non-white people couldn't vote in national elections. After years of protesting, non-white people gained the right to vote in 1870. Even so, some minor parties like the Communists hate this and want to get rid of voting rights for everyone except Communists.
International Organisations
PRTO
The PRTO stands for the Pacific Republics Treaty Organization. Their goal is to keep the peace in the Pacific Republics. It was founded in 1938 and its current secretary general is Noro Johnston.
United Nations
Segland joined the United Nations in 1987. Its current status is UN Member. For 2032-2035, Pleva Nuskio was the secretary general of the United Nations, and she was a Seglish woman who had served as the first female Seglish Prime Minister in 2020-2025.
Sport

Sports are an important aspect of life in Segland, and there is a soccer team for almost every city of over 100,000 people. Some people will pay over ₡800 for just one ticket to a soccer game with their favorite team! Segland hopes to join the World Cup Committee soon.
Military

Segland is the current president of the Pacific Republican Army, which has around 30 million soldiers. Anyone 19 and up can serve/be drafted for the army. There are currently 3.2 million soldiers in the Seglish Armed Forces, 60% of which are in the Army division. Segland has known war since ancient times, and the Segs won approximately 90% of the battles the fought. Even so, Segland tries to maintain a peaceful nation and has an embassy in most nations.
