Scandonia (pronounced /ˌskːən'doːniːə/ in English or /ˌsxɒːn'doʊːniːɛ/ in Dutch), officially the Kingdom in Right of Scandonia (Dutch: Rechtskoninkrijk Scandonië), is a country in southeastern Atlantian Oceania, occupying much of northwestern Foringana. Scandonia also possesses 17 small islands off its northern coast, approximately equidistant between the Scandonian mainland and Pacifica. The country shares land borders with Pacitalia to the south and southeast, and Nova Prosperitas to the east. Pacifica is directly north across open sea, while Falcania lies to the west across the Carcossian Sea.
Scandonia is a historical seafaring nation whose economic prosperity was built over a foundation of excellence in marine trade. The country was originally a colony of Dutch settlers who found the previously unclaimed and uninhabited areas of northwestern Foringana during a sailing expedition in the 15th century. The granting of its independence in December 1566, and the creation of a hereditary monarchy, were the result of remarkable, unusual and unlikely circumstances. The nation's most important document, which guaranteed its sovereignty and its future, was an agreement signed with Pacitalia in 1599, legally defining the frontier and border between the two countries.
Today the country is one of the wealthiest in Atlantian Oceania and among the most extensively industrialised, with an intricate and highly-developed shipping and transport network, as well as a sizeable banking industry. While Scandonia has embraced social democracy in its domestic politics for much of the 20th and 21st centuries, it has historically embraced free market economics and has a large and affluent middle class with little to no economic or income disparity between regions. A high level of debt-to-income and debt-to-GDP, along with badly needed reforms in the public sector, are concerns and are a priority for the Scandonian government.
Scandonia has an extensive welfare state. It is a leader in gender and racial equality and LGBT rights (as part of the Queer Belt), and is a leading contributor of aid to the developing world. However, due to its small population and comparatively smaller economic output, Scandonia's aspired foreign policy ambitions (to be a leading diplomatic voice within the region) have traditionally been hindered. The country does not have an active army in the traditional sense. It fields a small defence force that is mainly used for peacekeeping operations in situations of international conflict.
Scandonia is organised as a constitutional monarchy with a hereditary king or queen as the head of state. Scandonians elect members of parliament, from which a government, headed by a prime minister, is formed. The country is nominally a unitary state, but is divided into provinces with significant political authority. Scandonia has also devolved many powers to municipalities. Though legally a unilingual country, speaking Dutch, Scandonians are known for their multilingual tendencies, with many, especially younger, people speaking English, French, Spanish, German, Danish and/or Pacitalian. In addition, there is a legally recognised French Community in the country's southeast, which traces Scandonia's borders with Nova Prosperitas and Pacitalia.
The country's capital is Randshaven; its largest city is Korendam.
