The National Armed Forces of the Independent Nation of the Republic of Lanos (Lanosian: Die Nationalen Streitkräfte des Independent Nation von der Republik Lanos or Die Republik Lanos Streitkräfte) are the military forces of the Independent Nation of the Repubic of Lanos. They consist of the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, Field Military Police, Pony Legion and the National Guard. The armed forces are directly under the command of the President of Lanos as the commander-in-chief, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, and the civilian Secretary of Defense. The services coordinate with each other to defend the country and its allies. Today, the Military is the defense arm of Lanos with a combined strength of 1.75 million servicemen, most of that active-duty forces. The Military's main mission is to defend the Lanosian mainland and the territories and to provide assistance to the nation's allies in time of need.

The armed forces were created in 1864 under the name of the Revolutionary Army of Lanos as a means to resist the ethnic Cordan apartheid regime established in 1811. The militia was the major and, later, sole power to resist the apartheid regime from its formation to the revolution. During the Lanosian Revolution, the Revolutionary Army overthrew the occupation of the country and defeated the Imperial Army, gaining the independence of Lanos. It would also fight in the Saludos War in the early 1970s. After arming itself for defending Lanos from all threats after the war, the Armed Forces was the major combatant against the People's Republic of Lanos and the People's Armed Forces and subsequently won the Lanos Civil War in 1991, later going on to defeat Underium in a separate conflict.

History

Main Article: Military history of the Republic of Lanos

The history of the Lanos Armed Forces spans from its initial creation under the Republican Army of Lanos to the modern times under its service for the Independent Nation. Throughout the years, the Lanosian Armed Forces has served admirably in all of its various conflicts that it served in and continues to record its actions in the annals of Lanosian history for all those willing to serve in a military devoted to fighting for freedom over tyranny.

Service Branches

By law, the military's active-duty strength (about half of the military's size) is limited to between 1-2% of the total national population except in times of war or other national emergencies in which the military's active strength can go as high as 5%. This means that if the national population was 250 million, the four combat branches would have a maximum combined total of 2.5-5 million at peacetime or during a conflict that did not require a massive mobilization of forces. The National Guard is not restricted in this way though the National Government and the military commanders would prefer to have an total even number when it comes to the overall manpower strength.

Lanos Army

A Lanosian soldier on watch during a lull on the outskirts of Marina during the early stages of the Battle of Marina (Battle of Marina, Lanos Civil War, September 3, 1990).

The Lanos Army (Lanos Heer) consists of 500,000 men and 5 Field Armies with at least 45,000 men and four divisions in each field army and five independent divisions with a total of 25 divisions. All field armies are commanded by a Major General or a Colonel General. The structure of the Army was changed in 2010 to represent general deployment issues when it came to world conflicts. While at least 60% of the Army remains in Lanos and its territories for national defense, the remaining 40% can be deployed across the world if needed. For its formations, the Army is organized in a brigade combat team-style organization with more emphasis on combat units in each BCT. With 3,000 men assigned to each BCT, this makes for 4 BCTs and supportive units in a division that is typically comprised of 15,000 men. Each division is comprised of four BCTs (infantry, mechanized, armored, etc.), one combat aviation brigade made of 1,000 men, and the remaining 2,000 men in a sustainment brigade, which has supportive roles like headquarters and quartermaster units. All Army regiments and brigades that were reorganized into the new formations became BCTs in all but name to retain historic traditions and lineage (while division lineage remains the same before reorganization). The Lanos Army, with 15,000 men in each division, has about 15 divisions divided into the 5 field armies (10 infantry divisions, two armored divisions, and three mechanized infantry divisions) and five separate independent combat divisions (Airborne, Panzergrenadier, Assault, Capital, Cavalry). The remaining personnel are focused in support and non-combat units, the Special Forces Division, and the First Division (Army HQ). The composition of the Army is about that of the real-life United States Army with more men, more weaponry, and more devotion to combat forces than non-combat forces.

Lanos Air Force

The Lanos Air Force (Lanos Luftwaffe) is comprised of 200,000 and the six commands (Strategic Air Command, Air Combat Command, Special Operations Command, Mobility Command, Materiel Command, and Education and Training Command) with several air forces and separate wings assigned to each command. The Air Force is the first line of defense in Lanos and is equipped with up-to-the-date equipment to fight and defend Lanos. The Air Force is also devoted to the defense of Lanosian cyberspace and space to protect Lanos from multiple threats even if they may not seem to be coming from a known enemy. Its bases are located across the homeland and the territories. The Air Force also has the Special Operations Ground Force, a 20,000 man special forces unit and acts as the Air Force's ground force during combat situations that has two paratrooper brigades, a general special forces brigade, and a pararescue brigade. State-of-the-art equipment, like the F-22 Raptor and other modern craft and weapons, is used to defend Lanos and its allies across the world. The commands are led by a Colonel General with the air forces by Lieutenant Generals or Major Generals and the wings are often commanded by Colonels or Brigadier Generals.

Lanos Navy

The Lanos Navy (Lanos Marine) consists of 200,000 men are mostly dedicated to the 4 fleets (around 40,000 men in each) with 40,000 devoted to ground-based duties. These fleets are based in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and conduct frequent deployments across the NS world. All can be based on the mainland from Port Darthur and Georgetown, at Celedon in the Cordan Islands, Georgetown in Hobbes City, the port city of Freitown in the state of Novestra, the port city of Menard in Longrova, and the city of Hotrod in the Hotrod Islands, with 1 fleet based in the Pony Lands. In an effort to modernize the Navy to combat multiple threats, the National Government procured 16 Washington-class Nuclear Guided Heavy Battleships as well as procuring domestically-produced modern destroyers, cruisers, aircraft carriers, submarines, aircraft, and other ships and materiel needed by the Navy to fight across the seas of the world. Each fleet is commanded by a Vice Admiral or a Fleet Admiral.

Lanos Marine Corps

The Lanos Marine Corps (Lanos Marinekorps) numbers 50,000 men and is stationed wherever the Navy is, despite being a separate branch from the Navy. They are the Navy's ground force and are one of the most elite forces in the nation. The Marines are currently stationed in assorted Navy and Marine bases across the nation's possessions and territories. The Marines also operate a separate combat aviation force and that force fights alongside the Navy's aviation force. The ground component of the Marines is comprised of 2 Marine divisions totaling 30,000 men. The divisions are commanded by a Lieutenant General and numbers around 15,000 men. Their brigades are frequently split up and deployed across the world. The divisions are the largest ground combat organization in the Marine Corps. The ground combat force is organized into brigade combat teams similar to the Lanos Army. The remaining 20% of the Marines is the combat aviation branch and other support units that assist the Marine Corps to work alongside the Navy to accomplish tasks together.

Lanos Field Military Police

The Lanos Field Military Police (Lanos Feld Militärpolizei) numbers 50,000 men and is the country's main military police force. While the other services have a limited military police force for specialized duties, the Field Military Police is the nation's general military police force, enforcing military law across the services and assisting the Republic of Lanos National Police in its duties when required. The force is divided into 5,000-man brigades but is not used for combat. The force's duties are for enforcing military law, supporting civilian law enforcement agencies, and providing security for sensitive military installations, the rear of a battle front, and counterinsurgency operations. There is a specialized combat division in the force that can be used for combat operations but while the Field Military Police is trained for combat, it is not used in any combat role unless there is no other alternative.

Lanos National Guard

Marina National Guardsmen in a defensive position near the town of Marinagrad during an attempt to clear out a Fascist Remnant unit during the post-War period (Fascist Remnant, August 12, 1991). These men would have their M69 vests replaced by the PASGT vest by the end of 1991.

The Lanos National Guard (Lanos Nationalgarde) is comprised of 750,000 men and sourced from the 25 states and the territories. The Guard is only called up for national defense emergencies and other events as determined by the President, who has the direct authority to mobilize the Guard into national service. The Guard is also used by the states to maintain civil order within their borders unless called to national service. The Guard calls upon elements from across the four armed services to act as a home defense reserve force. Each state and territory is required to have a National Guard in their state and is funded by both provincial/territorial and national funding. They cannot leave the nation or its territories during a war or any other conflict without Congressional approval. The National Guard of each state and territory takes its commands from the governor, unless mobilized nationally, and assists in peacekeeping, humanitarian efforts, defense, and law enforcement in the state or territory. Army National Guard divisions are similarly commanded and composed as their Army counterparts (15,000 men in each division) and come under Army command in times of national mobilization. These divisions use the same brigade combat team-organization the Army uses. The Army Guard formation is different with each state having a Guard division and support forces. There are 30 Army Guard divisions and various support brigades and units. There are no National Guard field armies as the National Guard divisions will fall under the command of the active-duty Army field armies. The Air National Guard mainly comprises of two air commands (Air Combat Command, Materiel and Mobility Command) and these are mainly devoted to assisting the Air Force in defending Lanosian airspace and assisting in combat and non-combat missions in Lanos and its territories. There is also a Marine National Guard that operates as a reserve for the Marine Corps. There is no National Guard for the Navy and the Field Military Police. The National Guard is divided into its branches in an unique way, going by the same ratio that the active services go by.

Lanos Pony Legion

The Lanos Pony Legion, a 20,000 strong pony-only force, was created in 2013 as a means to assist the integration of the pony population of Lanos into Lanosian society. While the military was opened to ponies with limited positions open to them given their proportion of the population is only .2% at the time, the National Government and pony advocacy groups considered it somewhat unfair that they couldn't serve in the Lanosian military even if they wished to serve. It was decided by President Marina Aruthyan to create a foreign legion for the pony population to serve in and to integrate into the nation that they would be serving for. The legion would be open for Lanosian ponies to serve in but is only open to ponies (except very few human servicemen assigned to assist in training and advising) and anypony of any nationality is welcome to enlist with some priority given to Lanosian ponies. The Legion is a unique mini-Army force that comprises of 1 division with multiple specialized brigades and is the only force in the Lanosian military for ponies.

Recruitment and Training

Both recruitment and conscription is used to enlist servicemen into the Military. Voluntary enlistment and conscription for males and females are open to those 18-35 years of age. Conscripts are subject to serving a term of mandatory active military service for 3 years and are chosen from the Selective Service draft system (upon leaving their mandatory service, conscripts with excellent records are transferred into the National Guard or the reserves for a term of 2 years until separation or stay in the active duty forces for the remainder of the five year term they were conscripted into if they so choose); voluntary enlistment earns a initial 5 year term of service and are automatically removed from the draft. Most recruits, though, are chosen to remain in the active service for the full five years (around 60%). Both types of recruits can choose to re-enlist once their original terms expire and can retire after up to a total of 20-30 years of enlisted service and/or until they reach the age of 55. Officers can either be selected into a officer training program, enter the Military Academies, graduate and be commissioned from a Reserve Officers' Training Corps program, or enlist as officers upon joining in special circumstances. Their initial terms last for a minimum of anywhere between 5-10 years but officers can choose to serve until they turn 60 for Commissioned and Flag Rank officers and/or upon reaching anywhere between 20-30 years of service. All types of these veterans, if they are fit for service after their initial terms and have not reached at least 60 years of age, can be recalled to military service in times of national emergencies. In the event of such an emergency, the Selective Service system maintains a separate draft list for these veterans for immediate recall.

Human beings (Homo sapiens) are eligible for being inducted into the Armed Forces because humans are the dominant species of Lanos while other humanoid species can be inducted in times of national emergencies. Ponies (Equus sapiens), the dominant non-human species in Lanos, are not eligible for induction, comprising .2% of the national population. They do have the recourse of joining the Pony Legion. Since 1981, women can serve in the combat branches of the services and be conscripted into the services (from 1964, women could have served in devoted non-combat branches and remain exempt from the draft), thus women are required to register in the Selective Service system alongside men. This move was made to provide gender equity in the services while freeing more men into combat roles. As of 2013, almost all branches of the armed forces are open to women and women serve in all but a few branches where men are only allowed in (special forces, submarine duty, etc.).

Upon enlistment, all recruits of all ranks and services swear the military enlistment oath:

I *name* do swear (or affirm) that to the best of my ability and of my resolve, that I will join the National Armed Forces of the Independent Nation of the Republic of Lanos to defend this independent nation from all foreign and domestic threats, to only carry out the lawful orders of the President, all military commanders, and my commanding officers and non-commissioned officers, to abide by the Military Penal Code, to defend the Constitution and the laws of this nation, and to protect the people of this nation from all those wishing to bring harm to them. So help me God.

—Lanosian Military Oath, 1964

After enlistment, the recruits are sent to various Military Entry Processing Centers according to their respective branches spread across the nation. However, this form of training is about the same. Upon arrival, the recruits are sent through orientation, which includes physicals, shots, military procedural code and military law classes, basic soldiering, drug tests, fitness testing and health physicals, and uniform issuing. After a week at these centers, they enter basic training in various bases across Lanos depending on their service branch. Basic training consists of a 10-12 week course that teaches recruits the basics of combat and other needed training during combat and non-combat situations. Also, basic to mid-level fluency in the Lanosian language is taught to confirm that each and every Lanosian servicemen speaks the language of the country they serve for as well as to communicate during wartime by confusing the enemy with a language they may not know. After basic training, the newly-graduated servicemen go on to advanced training courses dependent on their branch of service and the arm within the service they were selected to join. The whole training process take about 6-12 months on average.

Uniforms of the Lanos Armed Forces

The Woodland LanosPAT digital camouflage pattern, standardized in 2001, for general service across the armed services in general woodland enviornments.
The Desert LanosPAT digital camouflage pattern, standardized in 2001, for general service across the armed services in desert environments.

The armed forces uses the Lanos Battle Dress Uniform (with OG 107, German BDU, and U.S. Army Combat Uniform features with epaulets and made in a blend of 50% nylon and 50% cotton) with the Class II steel M1 Combat Helmet, Class IIIA Kevlar M1K Combat Helmet, and the Class IIIA Protective Armor System for Ground Troops flak jacket with the Class IV Interim Small Arms Protective Overvest, and the Class IV Enhanced Outer Tactical Vest (like an American Improved Outer Tactical Vest and a Modular Tactical Vest with more neck/throat protection and other improvements) as protective armor. Protective gear for CBRN encounters consists of the Mission Oriented Protective Posture (MOPP) gear and the M50 Protective Mask.

Dress uniforms similar of those of the modern German Army/old East German Army (in feldgrau) are in use for the Army while the other branches have dress uniforms similar to their respective American armed services. Other headwear includes other combat and non-combat helmets, garrison caps, patrol caps, sun hats, campaign hats, and peaked caps while combat boots are generally rough-out suede leather Multicam/coyote-brown, olive-green/black jungle boots, or leather black boots. Dress shoes and boots are generally polished black or leather brown boots and shoes. The M1 Combat Helmet is used for ceremonial purposes as well as combat use. Army branch services are marked on dress uniforms according to a mix of German Waffenfarbe and U.S. related insignia. The other services use only U.S. insignia and systems.

The camouflage patterns of the various branches generally follow one uniform set. Replacing the six-color Desert Battle Dress Uniform, jungle tigerstripe, and the ERDL pattern, the LanosPAT digital camouflage patterns were introduced in 2001 as a means to have a standard pattern for the entire armed forces. The woodland pattern was created to suit the environment of Lanos while the desert pattern was the digitization of the DBDU pattern. The Navy and Marines are the exception to this rule using the Navy Working Uniform alongside the LanosPAT uniforms. The Armed Forces uses the PASGT flak jacket in LanosPAT (with covers if required) and the Standard Plate Carrier System and the Enhanced Outer Tactical Vest in both olive-green and coyote brown due to its universality in multiple environments. All common-issue TA-50 is also colored in olive-drab and coyote brown. Black-colored vests and TA-50 are used for ship-based duties and white-colored vests and TA-50 for snowy environments. Despite the common patterns, the M81 Woodland, ERDL, six-color desert, jungle tigerstripe, olive-green, coyote-brown, Multicam, and the MARPAT/NWU patterns can also be used for all branches of the military if in the event the terrain and environment requires the usage of such patterns; white uniforms and gear are also in use if snowy environments are present.

Under current regulations, all combat uniforms must have the following on them, regardless of type:

Lanos and Weapons of Mass Destruction

The Independent Nation has maintained its WMD program, starting roughly in 1965, as a means to help defend Lanos from external threats. Encompassing nuclear and orbital weapons with a comprehensive missile shield, the program provides for a wide range of means to retaliate and protect the country from invasion. Its general policy on retaliation after a WMD attack is to retaliate with a comparable WMD. The country will retaliate with nuclear weapons regardless of what WMD is used to attack Lanos. Below is a general survey of the three weapons categories used as WMDs:

Nuclear weapons

Lanos started its nuclear program in 1965 under the supervision of the Department of Energy and the military, capping off with a successful nuclear test in 1968. The nuclear forces of the military that will deploy nuclear weapons are the Air Force's Strategic Air Command, which will deploy the aircraft-deployed and missile launched warheads; the Army and the Marine Nuclear Weapons Division of their artillery branch, which will control nuclear artillery warheads and theater-range missiles; and the Navy's Strategic Nuclear Deployment Command, which will handle the ship-based weapons. The combined total of these warheads, 70% of which are comprised of missile-deployed payloads in MIRVed configurations, 5% as single-warhead missiles and the remainder as tactical-deployed weapons, number up to 1,000. The minimum payload for the arsenal is around half a kiloton (such as nuclear artillery shells) and the maximum payload is reaches the upper possible limit of 5 megatons while most Lanosian nuclear warheads have 1 mt. payloads. The submarine-deployed Trident 3 missile is the mainstay of the Lanosian nuclear MIRV missile arsenal (50%) with the Peacekeeper 2 as the ground-based MIRV defensive reserve (20%) (both missile types have configurations of 10 1 mt. warheads/missile) while the Titan 4 single-warhead nuclear missile is considered as a city/base-buster and is kept on with its 10mt. warhead to act as a devastating factor to the enemy's strategic assets and as a defensive reserve weapon (5%). The other methods of nuclear weapons deployment (aircraft, artillery, ship-launched non-SLBM missile and non-missile, theater-range missile) only comprise 25% of the nuclear arsenal but are used as tactical weapons. In the event of an enemy deployment of their own nuclear weapons or a massive enemy invasion, these warheads will be used to devastate the enemy in retaliation for their act against Lanos. There is a program active to modernize and replace aging warheads, nuclear tests, delivery systems, and provide modernized protection against nuclear weapons to keep up with foreign global nuclear deployments.

Biological weapons

Lanos never weaponized biological germs and vectors, but instead researched vaccines and cures as well as researched the germs and vectors used in biological weapons. Today, the National Biological Weapon Protection Research Program works to defend Lanos from bio-hazardous weapons with vaccines, cures, disinfectants, and other items that would destroy or disable biological weapons, vectors, and macroscopic organisms that are classified as biological weapons. The Independent Nation considers the use of biological weapons, regardless of first or second-strike use, as a war crime and may retaliate appropriately with nuclear weapons.

Chemical weapons

Lanos has an active chemical weapons program and maintains stockpiles of VX starting in 1968. The number of tons of VX produced and held in stockpile was confirmed to be 1,000 tons but their deployment in combat, as a last resort area-denial tactic, is both controlled by the Air Force, the Army and the Marines. New agents are being researched and humanely tested. In conjunction with the weapons program, antidotes and protective gear are still researched and developed to ensure that personnel and civilians are protected from a enemy chemical weapons strike. Use of chemical weapons is only tolerated in a self-defense capacity against incoming forces (either offensively or defensively) and use against any type of civilian targets is a war crime and nuclear retaliation may result.

National Missile Shield

The Republic of Lanos National Missile Shield Program was originally created in early 1991 as a means to repel enemy ballistic missiles, particularly fascist Scud missiles occasionally fired at Lanosian civilian populations. From then on, the program developed to target anywhere between theater-range missiles and ICBMs to provide a missile shield over Lanos and its territories. The missiles and weapons in the program range between the Iron Dome air defense system and the Phalanx Counter-Rocket, Artillery, and Mortar air defense system, super-long range radars and satellites tasked for tracking and detecting threats, the short-medium range David's Sling missile system, the medium-long range Patriot and Arrow missile systems, the long-super long range Arrow 3 missile system and Aegis missile destroyers and other ships tasked solely with missile defense duties. The Missile Shield is based across Lanosian territory including the homeland, the STC, and the Pony Lands territories.
