In a broad definition, a republic is a state whose political organization rests on the principle that the citizens or electorate constitute the ultimate root of legitimacy and sovereignty. This is a somewhat misleading description, however, as many dictatorships are called "republics." Democratic republics are sometimes styled "constitutional republics," meaning that the government willingly submits to restraints imposed by rule of law. Federal republics are republics where local governments are reserved specific powers, and the power of the centralized government is limited. The head of a republic is typically styled president, chancellor, director, or some other non-regal title.
