The Ocnus (or "Ground Sloth")-class Main Battle Tank is a lighter, faster variant of the successful Smilodon mark 2 MBT, created by Tanaru Ground Systems primarily for the export market, though a later decision was taken to equip the Inutoland Naval Infantry with the Ocnus.
Utilising the same chassis, engine and transmission as the Smilodon, it has a few minor differences in the hull, and a completely new turret. Like its heavier big brother, the Ocnus houses its three crew members completely within the hull. The Ocnus, however, takes the small turret of the Smilodon a step further, having a very narrow, completely unmanned turret containing only an autoloader, and that arranged vertically to further reduce the silhouette of the turret.
This reduced-size turret provides almost all of the 8t weight saving compared to the 64-tonne Smilodon mark 2; the rest of the weight savings come from a slight armour reduction.
This necessitated a certain degree of internal rearranging, and the Ocnus is somewhat cramped in comparison to the Smilodon as a result. The commander's hatch, which in the Smilodon MBT is atop the turret in the conventional location, has been moved in the lighter Ocnus MBT to the front of the hull, next to the driver's hatch.
The origninal Ocnus MBT used an older variant of Inutoland's standard Warshell armour to keep costs and weight down. It was thus less protected than the Smilodon, and was slightly more to the "manoeuvrability" end of the armour-manoeuvrability continuum. However, after the decision to purchase the Ocnus MBT for the Naval Infantry, the standard armour was upgraded to the latest generation of Warshell armour.
Observation periscopes on the Ocnus, like the Smilodon, utilise thermal imaging and night vision sensors, as well as laser telemetry. A sophisticated fire control suite incorporates a system which delays firing should the gun barrel be jerked off line suddenly (for example, if the tank is firing while on the move), improving accuracy.
The main armament of the Ocnus, like the Smilodon, is the same 125mm ETC cannon, with a vertical autoloader allowing for a reduced-profile turret. A coaxial 12.7mm Inuto machine gun provides the primary antipersonnel weapon, with a remotely-operated pintle-mounted 12.7mm machine gun for air defence. These are lighter weapons than the 14.25mm MGs of the Smilodon.
The reduced weight of the Ocnus relative to the Smilodon improves the performance and handling of the Model 19 twin-turbo diesel engine, and the Ocnus has a resultant top road speed of 110km/h.
