North Mack (pronounced: /nɔrθ mæk/), officially the Terran Empire of North Mack, is a stellar empire located mainly on the edge of the Sagittarius arm of the Milky Way Galaxy. Consisting of 27 systems, North Mack is ruled from the capital planet, Helmrakai. The empire shares 'borders' (if they can be called that) with two other regional powers, The Cerberus Alliance and Bretonia.

[edit] History

North Mack started its life as a small nation back on Earth. Declaring independence from the tyrannical nation of Mack (located southeast of Russia), North Mack experienced a war torn history from the very start. Refusing to recognize North Mack, Mack remained resolute that the northern province remained under its control, while North Mack maintained its independence. When the United Nations considered allowing a North Mack delegate, Mack launched a full scale invasion of its northern neighbor. Being small and newly formed, North Mack suffered a brutal occupation.

Partly through a stroke of luck, and partly through contingency plans, the large majority of key Mackan scientists managed to escape the invading forces and retreated to a hidden military bunker deep in the mountain. Equipped with full amenities and working labs, the bunker housed the scientists and remaining military figures for the duration of the occupation. Working continually and tirelessly, the scientists churned out invention after invention after invention. Despite initially high failure rates, with technology and time marching on, the scientists were able to develop superior weapons and armor for the resistance forces in and around North Mack.

As the guerrilla forces through out North Mack gained more and more victories, the influence of the new designs spread. Slowly, the North Mack forces carved out small pieces of territory from the occupation. As factories were taken over, they produced more arms and armor for the resistance. As the Mack forces were forced to retreat from former North Mack territory, more and more civilians joined the resistance and took up arms. Eventually, after a long and grueling 6 years of perpetual combat, the last Mack soldier retreated from North Mack.

Finally garnering independence recognized by the UN, North Mack settled down under its own rule at last. Building on the work of the scientists during the occupation, North Mack strove to become a nation known for its technological prowess. Just short of a decade later, North Mack had gained its status as one of the most technologically and economically advanced nations in the world. The expert engineers and scientists deep within the North Mack capital churned out cutting edge technology year after year, giving North Mack a large economical and military advantage against Mack, who was stirring to avenge past losses.

The North Mack space program led it to become one of many other nations to join in the race for the stars. Having developed simple FTL drives, as well as the ability to store humans for long periods of time, allowed North Mack access to many new habitable planets being discovered in the far reaches of space. And with its southern rival preparing for war, North Mack made a decision which would change its history forever.

Under cover of darkness, North Mack began Operation:Planetary Seed. A large transport ship was built on the far side of the moon, away from the prying eyes of Mack. In secret, thousands of citizens were transported from the surface to this transport ship, and stored in cold sleep for the long journey. The best and the brightest were given top priority, however there was more then enough space for a good deal of civilians. In the end, just short of 6% of the entire North Mack population was loaded aboard this massive ship. When Mack launched an invasion of North Mack, the transport was launched at a far distant star, and the single habitable planet surrounding it, Helmrakai.

The journey took 27 years with the slow moving FTL drives. At the end of the journey, the crew was woken, and the ship landed. As the years passed, the rest of the colonists were woken, and the first city on Helmrakai was born. 4 years after the landing of the transport, the city erected a long range antennae, to find long strings of bad news following them. North Mack on Earth had been invaded, occupied, and all the citizens there killed. It was a genocide never before seen by the North Mack citizens. In honor, the colonists re-founded North Mack, as it were. So began, the Terran Dominion of North Mack.

[edit] The Revolution

North Mack enjoyed almost half a century as a Republic. However, as time grew, a group of people began to grow concerned and angry about the decisions

of the council. Each decision seemingly led to disaster on the (relatively) new nations part. After engaging with a brief but disastrous war with a distant Nation-Planet, the group took to the streets, publicly demonstrating against the current council members. Continually and repeatedly, the group demonstrated against the council, and slowly their public support grew. When the peaceful demonstrations began growing in size (and in some cases turning violent) the Council was forced to take action. Fearing an uprising, the council secretly authorized the military to capture and hold the leaders of this group.

The head of this group, Jacob Nessmik, was an ex-marine veteran of this most recent failed war. When the military came to capture him, they mistakenly sent only a squad of (5) soldiers. Jacob quickly killed 2, disarmed one, and captured the remaining 2. Realizing that this authorization had come from the council, Nessmik fled with the captives to a cave outside of the capital. Gathering his most trusted group members with him, he recounted what happened.

For 2 weeks the council heard no more of the group or its demonstrations. 2 weeks and 3 days later, they received a tape. In it, Nessmik notified the council, that by its decision to attack him, they had declared war on him, and on the now formed, North Mack Guerrilla Front. The NMGF vowed to remove the council from power, by any means within its grasp. Though small, Jacob trained all the members of the group to fight using whatever means available to them. The Marines were repeatedly sent against the NMGF in an attempt to destroy them. Though some NMGF members were lost in the attack, they would routinely cause more casualties then they took. This sparked ire in the surviving Marines, who blamed the Council for the deaths of their comrades. Occasionally, Marines would actually defect to the NMGF because of this. Additionally, many civilians saw this as the Councils stubborn refusal to see reason, and joined the NMGF to oust the Council as their decisions led to more and more damage to the nation.

Finally, after a period of 4 years, the NMGF launched a full scale assault on a supply depot within the capital. Capturing 3 tanks and 2 jeep, they destroyed a nearby fuel storage plant, before disappearing back into the night. As the flames burned in the night, so did the anger of the citizens. After watching the council make bad decision after bad decision, watching them refuse to acknowledge that change was needed, and watching the citizens suffer because of it, they had had enough. The civilian populace took to the streets and openly demonstrated against the council.

Work ground to a halt as 92% of the city took to the streets, converging on the capital building. They demonstrated for 7 hours, being held back from the building by the national guard. Upon seeing this, the NMGF entered the city, and led the assault on the capital building. After a long, bloody 2 hours, the council was cornered, and killed, in their official chambers. The revolution was over.

[edit] Formation of the Terran Empire

After the destruction of the Republic of North Mack, a state of chaos existed for several years across the planet. With no legitimate government in place, order began to break down. Fortunately, the Marine Corps (who were at that time used for defensive purposes only) organized and worked with individual city governances to keep order as best as they could. After a (relatively) short 7 months, once again Nessmik stepped up and seized control of the capital city, and the planetary government.

Nessmik declared that no more would North Mack be a republic. The colonists had come all this way from earth to start a new life, and a new government, among the stars. And North Mack would have the stars. To secure humanity's right in the cosmos, they would need to band together and move in a single, unified direction. And leading the nation in that direction, would be a single ruler, with a plan. Nessmik declared himself the First Emperor of the North Mack. At first the public acceptance of this was less then enthusiastic. But as Nessmik, who already was lauded as the hero of the revolution, began enacting programs to bring North Mack back to a stable, pre-war state, public support grew.

Over time, Nessmik enacted various programs to begin colonization of nearby systems, to "secure humanity's place." 4 other planets were colonized: Rosiwui, Tierr, Schild, and Keenoroch. These planets helped solidify the idea of an Empire in the publics view. A few days after the colonization of the 4th planet, Nessmik announced that North Mack would be henceforth known as the Terran Empire. Later this year sweeping changes were enacted, including the establishment of the Imperial Reckoning calendar, or I.R. system. Also created was the Council and the Chiefs, as Nessmik realized that there were areas outside of his expertise.

[edit] First Contact

North Mack continued along it's path of colonization at an astonishing pace, colonizing another 5 worlds (bringing the total up to 10) within the next half century. However, this was not without its disadvantages. North Mack began attracting the notice of other, greater powers in the milky way. Previously thinking they were alone in their local space, the Terran Empire was astonished when an unknown, alien, and hostile race attacked and invaded one of the newer colonies on the edge of Terran Space.

Kunorui, lacking most any defenses as one of the newest colonies, quickly fell and was occupied by the alien race, known in historical documents only as the "Beetles" because of their tough, carapace covered bodies. Many of the colonists there fled from the cities and occupation zones, protected by the few remaining Marine forces. While they fought valiantly, the Marines were outnumbered, and were forced to fall back to prevent any further losses.

[edit] Planets

Main article: Planets of North Mack

The Terran Empire has a total of 27 planetary bodies under its control, and many more moons and outposts. Most of these 27 worlds have dedicated purposes to the empire, such as industrial, agricultural, military applications, etc. Of the 27 planets, the 3 Largest planets are Helmrakai, the homeworld, Schild, the military planet, and Mankeris, a residential planet.

[edit] Helmrakai

Helmrakai viewed from space
Helmrakai viewed from space
Helmrakai has the distinction of being the Largest, the Most Populated, and the Oldest planet of the Terran Empire. The Homeworld of North Mack, Helmrakai currently contains 12.6 Billion residents. Although recent questions have arisen as to the sustainability of such a large population, the problem is eased by the fact that the planet is much larger then Earth (almost 4 times the land mass), white only marginally denser. This combines to create a total gravity of only 1.4 Earth normal, making Mack citizens appear physically stronger and heartier when in normal earth gravity.

Most of Helmrakai's resources are imported from other planets within the empire, such as Tierr, the agricultural planet, where 50% of all food produced there is shipped directly to Helmrakai. This has led to very tangled airspace above the planet. The NMPNv3, or North Mack Planetary Navigator version 3, is a high level AI designed entirely for controlling and directing space traffic above the planet. Although many find it unsettling, it is illegal to have any ship (other then military class ships) on manual control within 1 Planetary Diameter of Helmrakai. The Planetary Navigator overrides and controls all ships around Helmrakai, so as to avoid collisions and ease navigation problems.

As for the physical aspects of Helmrakai, the planet itself is largely Earth-like, due to the terraforming of the original colonists. Containing 29% Water, the surface area of the planet is largely covered with vast cities, both on land and on the water itself, as well as below the surface. The largest city on Helmrakai is Morakai, with a total of 143.6 Million citizens within the city limits. Morakai is also the planets largest underground network, with 12.6 million of that 143.6 Million living underground in a vast network of linked tunnels and complexes.

[edit] Schild

Schild is the Military Planet of the Empire. Although every planet in North Mack is militarized to some extend, Schild is entirely dedicated to the military forces. The staging point for practically every single military operation in the Empire, Schild contains thousands of military bases, training sites, ship drydocks, orbital docks, grounds for war games, and every other military facility you can name. Housing anywhere from 2 - 3 Billion soldiers and crewmen at any one point in time, Schild is perhaps the single most formidable planet in the entire empire, and contains enough supplies and fortifications to be held for almost a decade if necessary.

[edit] Mankeris

Mankeris around its star
Mankeris around its star
Mankeris is the second largest planet in the Empire, despite its complete and total lack of atmosphere. Founded originally as a mining colony, vast underground tunnel networks were built and linked to above ground sealed complexes. After much of the planets resources were stripped and shipped for construction of the vast amount of ships of the Fleet, the planet was slated to be abandoned due to the difficulty of conditions there. However as chance would have it, a revolution came around in the field of cutting and mining equipment with the advent of the plasma cannon. Utilizing precisely controlled beams of plasma, a mining team could cut ten times as much rock per day as was previously possible.

Carving deep into the planet, the miners utilized the still warm core of the planet as an energy source, powering their structures with the energy from the thermal source. Many of the miners were making a living selling out the old mining camps as "tourist destinations" for those on Helmrakai, which was facing a heavy overpopulation crisis at the time. As they realized they could build an entire city with the new equipment, the miners settled down and carved out the first true city on Mankeris, Mankeris Prime. Despite the lack of originality, the city now enjoys a robust population of 65.9 million residents, the planets largest. The rest of the planets 4.7 Billion citizens reside in thousands of smaller communities buried deep into the crust of the planet.

[edit] Government

The government consists of 3 main bodies. The Emperor, The Chiefs, and The Council. Though a highly coveted position, neither The Chiefs nor The Council can truly override the Emperor in any decision. They merely exist to guide and advise him.

[edit] The Emperor

The Emperor has the final say on any and all decisions within the empire. Advised by the Chiefs and the Council, the Emperor examines any and all legislature proposed by the government, and gives it the final say as to bring it into effect, or veto it.
The Council, headed by The Chiefs
The Council, headed by The Chiefs

The Emperor is not a hereditary title (although it can be) as many would believe. Instead, the Emperor serves from time of appointment, until the age of 70. At that time, the current Emperor chooses a successor, usually his highest, most trusted member of the staff, who he believes will lead and protect the empire. Should the Emperor die before the age of 70, the successor is chosen by The Council.

[edit] The Chiefs

The Chiefs are those appointed to the cabinet position by the Emperor. His personal advising staff, they look over all legislature sent by the Council and make suggestions as to changes, and recommendations for the Emperor to pass or reject the item. Chiefs serve for life, or until removal by the Emperor. Usually a new Emperor will appoint an entirely new cabinet, but this is not always the case.

[edit] The Council

The Council is the citizen elected legislature that assembles and proposes all new law and actions for the government to take. It consists of 81 representatives serving for 6 years each. Each planet elects 3 representatives, 1 every 2 years on a rotational basis. Council members may be re-elected an unlimited amount of times, so long as the population of their planet wishes to do so. The Council is also responsible for electing a new Emperor should the current one die with no listed successor.

[edit] Civilians vs Citizens

North Mack consists of 2 distinct types of residents. Citizens, and Civilians. Since North Mack considers Military service one of the most crucial and important aspects of the Empire, all civilians are required to serve 2 years (from 18 - 20) in the military in some way. After the 2 years, the civilian may choose to leave the military, and continue in civilian life, or may choose to re-enlist. Recognizing re-enlistment as one of the highest forms of national duty, North Mack recognizes this by rewarding the civilian with Citizen status. Citizens may vote and hold public office, whereas civilians can not. This is considered one of the main reasons that North Mack is such a militaristic nation, as every single member of the government, as well as those voting, has served at least 5 years in the military.

[edit] Military

The North Mack Military is divided into three distinct and separate sections. The Marine Corps, the Star Fleet, and the Special Forces. Each plays an important role in combat situations for North Mack, however all 3 branches work together to form the successful military that so much of North Mack is invested in.

At 18, every civillian of the Empire, (Barrings those with serious medical conditions or mental handicaps) is required to serve 2 years in the military, be it Fleet or Marines. Although normally a choice is given, if enlistment drops too seriously in one of the branches, mandatory enlistment in the other may be required. After 2 years of service, the civilians are allowed to exit service, or re-enlist for a period of 5, 10, or 20 years, with benefits increasing with the amount of time spent in service. After the pre-determined time in service, the now citizens are granted all rights given to those of such status, including the right to vote and to hold public office.

[edit] ALERT Level

Peace Normal Raised Mobilized War
State of War

The ALERT Level is a measure of the activation and readiness level of the North Mack Military. It describes progressive postures for use by the various branches of the military. ALERT Levels are matched to the situations of military severity.

[edit] Marines

The North Mack Marine Corps is one of the driving forces behind the North Mack war machine. Equipped with the best military hardware in all of North Mack, placed through rigorous training, and backed by powerful vehicular and fleet support, the Marines can fight and overcome the deadliest enemies of the Empire. Although outnumbered by Fleet recruits by 2:1, the Marines remain one of the most important aspects of North Mack culture.

[edit] Star Fleet

The NMSF Orbiting Helmrakai
The NMSF Orbiting Helmrakai
The North Mack Star Fleet, or NMSF, controls any and all military vessels capable of space transport. The NMSF has more then twice as many personnel as the Marine Corps, due to a rather long self fulfilling cycle. With the larger number of recruits, more of them are placed on supply docks or servicing stations around Empire space, rather then on active combat ships. With this larger number of recruits essentially out of harms way, more civilians opt to sign up for the Fleet rather then the Marines, meaning more are placed in non-combat positions, and so on, the cycle ensuring it's own survival.

The combat ships of the fleet are widely varying in size and specialty. The fleet operates everything from one man fighters to kilometer long battlecruisers. Though advanced during their construction, an overall isolationist attitude has caused most of the ships operated by the fleet to be rather obsolete when it comes to modern warfare technology. With North Mack becoming increasingly involved in the Beta galactic quadrant, however, an increasing need for more advanced ships is showing itself. As such, designers and scientists across the Empire are being employed by the fleet to draft second generation ship designs based on recent combat engagements.
