The Massacre at Tor-Zum-Meer was a major event in what is sometimes considered the Kulverint-Alitaria War, and the whole campaign could be easily considered a failure for the Alitarian Army.
The Build Up
It had been just weeks since the Alitarians had managed to successfully flush Kulverint out of their former territory, Zwartania, and tnesions between the two nations were high. With this in mind, Kulverintian president Friansza Milverki (Jr.) decided that to avoid embarrassment they should "intervene" in the VDS civil war that was currently going on, and which the National Socialists were looking like winning. On the 2nd of February 2025, Kulverintian tanks broke straight through their own border defences to begin the glorious victory.
At around the same time, Alitarian boats began to arrive, unloading troops to invade the VDS themselves, and strike Kulverint where it would really hurt. They managed to land their troops on a small 3-mile wide section of beach which was the only section they could land on without trespassing on Kulverintian Waters. Their troops, too, made heavy progress, following the VDS troops to the waiting Kulverintian Army.
The two sides met for the first time at the town of Bräünat, where, just on the edge of the Trans-Scandinavian mountain range, Kulverint had the high ground, and won an easy victory with their artillery, tanks, and air support, which Alitaria did not have the availability of so far from home.
What followed was a massive retreat, with the Alitarian 1st Auxhiliary division realising halfway back that there was no point fighting any more, and it was a race to the sea.
The Battle
On the morning of 22nd of February 2025, the Alitarian 2nd and 3rd Auxhiliary Divisions passed through a small seaside village, called Tor-Zum-Meer, heading to the southerly beach where they had been picked up; however, a station of Kulverintian tanks blocked the route, and a small battle ensued, which the Alitarians escaped from with few losses, but they had to travel north a few miles to reach a safe place to exit their troops through the beaches. However, the Kulverintian tanks had necessitated a pick up from the narrowest point possible, just 2 miles south of Tor-Zum-Meer. Between Peninsula of Kulverint and the beach was just 4 miles of water, with heavy machine guns on the Kulverintian side, neccessitating great caution.
Meanwhile, just 3 miles back, the biggest battle of the war was being fought. The Alitarian Special Forces were attempting to hold back the Kulverintian Army from the beaches, but after 2 hours of fighting, Kulverint's superior tactics and overwhelming numbers won them the battle, and they moved swiftly on.
Around 2 and a half hours, into the evacuation, when the first boats were leaving the channel, and the second few just coming in, the Kulverintians reached the top of the cliffs, and immediately began to fire on the almost defenceless Alitarian Troops below. There was a panic, and the first few deaths were not from guns, but from being trampled or drowned in the panic to get on the boats. Eventually the water and the beaches became red with blood.
However, even for those lucky few who escaped the beaches it was not over. Some swam to the other side of the channel, not realising where they were swimming to, and getting a nasty surprise when they reached the shore on the other side and were immediately gunned down. Meanwhile, many of the boats who had escaped the channel were still in trouble, for there was heavy Kulverintian Artillery on both sides, whilst the navy was getting in on the act too. Several ships were sunk by Kulverintian Submarines that day.
Back on the beach, it was getting still worse. As some troops escaped to the north, more Kulverintian Divisions were sent north to capture them, although with limited success. The Air Force, too, was called in to bomb the beaches, but eventually, after 20 hours, it was all over.
For those who had survived, though, there was one final, nasty surprise, as the KPV were sent in to "clean up" the mess, or kill any survivors. In total, between Alitaria and VDS it is estimated that around 1,400,000 people died that day, whilst Kulverint was estimated as suffering more like 100,000 casualties.
Causes
The main reason that can be pointed to Alitaria's complete defeat in the war as a whole was their lack of experience. Their army was set out perfectly for attacking and defending islands, but not open fields for thousands of miles. They had very few tanks in comparison to Kulverint, allowing the Kulverintians to cover more ground faster and more efficiently.
It can also be said of the Alitarian Army that they had not counted on just how huge the distances were. After so many days of walking, the troops were so tired by the first battle that their will to fight will have been severely lowered.
However, it was not all about Alitaria. Kulverint were in quite the opposite state. After their horrific defeat in Zwartania, they were now back on turf they could fight well on, and they showed their huge experience could count, and that when fighting on a large scale, they knew exactly what to do. The whole event at Tor-Zum-Meer would not have happened had Kulverint not used their tanks to outflank Alitaria during the night, and this was probably the most important thing leading to the massacre. Without this, all the other events could have taken place in the same way, but there would have been hardly any casualties.
