Lists of multiple Olympic medalists

From NSwiki, the NationStates encyclopedia.

The following highly ill-advised, heavily work-in-progress, 100% non-authoritative article attempts to create several useful (read: utterly useless) lists of athletes who have won multiple medals at the Olympic Games.

All-time leading medalists

Phillipe Destry, a swimmer from Kelssek, has won more total medals (16) than any other person in Olympic history. Destry and Antônio Carlos Bamerindus, an equestrian rider from Cafundéu, have won 11 gold medals, more than any other Olympic competitors. The leaders among women are Jessica Langton, another Kelssekian swimmer, with 13 total medals, and Ariddian dual artistic/rhythmic gymnasts Anaïs Reed and Sonny Mokhobo (the latter also competed in trampoline) with 7 gold medals. The leader in individual gold medals, as opposed to those won in team/relay events, is Matthew Daniels of Reineberg, who won 6; Destry has the most overall medals in individual events (11).

Jérôme Taric of Ad’ihan is the most bemedalled Winter Olympic athlete, with eight medals in winter sports, including four gold medals. Counterintuitively, the next most bemedalled man and most bemedalled woman at the Winter Olympics hail from a tropical nation, Ariddia - dual short track/long track speed skaters Jean-Michel Chang (7) and Jessica Silversmith (4). Along with Taric, the latter is one of only three people to have won four gold medals at the Winter Olympics, the other being Cafundelense ski jumper Rogério Horizonte.

This table lists all Olympians who have won at least four gold medals or seven total medals; as per Olympic custom, it is ordered by gold medal count (then silver, then bronze) but is sortable. Winter Olympians are shown in blue.

Defended gold medal

The list of Olympians who have defended a gold medal at the Summer Games is much longer than that of those from the Winter Games for two reasons: there are many more events at the Summer Olympics, and the cancellation of the Third Winter Olympics with few events completed left many gold medalists from Keto unable to defend their medal.

Other than the Ariddian gymnastics teams, the only person to win a gold medal at the First Summer Olympics and defend it at the Second was sailor Jémîn Delmàto of Antrium. The reason for this is that the schedule of events changed quite drastically in this period, with the expansion of classes in weight restricted events, the elimination of certain events, and the addition of a large number of others. Smaller scale changes occurred prior to the Fourth Summer Olympics.

It does not need saying - though, having decided this page doesn't already contain enough redundant guff, we will say it anyway - that an individual can only defend their medal if entered by their NOC. If a delegation is absent from an Olympics (for example, Ariddia from the Fourth Summer Olympics) or enacts a boycott (such as the refusal of Bears Armed to entertain the "costs" associated with the Fifth Winter Olympics) then their competitors, no matter how world beating in gymnastics or figure skating, clearly lose the chance to defend their gold.

Equally, the nature of fluid time means that some nations perceive Olympic Games as occurring every year, 2 years, or 4 years, while others - most notably the Unified Capitalizt States - use a calendar fixed to the football World Cup cycle, thus making each Games decades after the last. This means that, in general, Olympians from Capitalizt SLANI or Jasĭyun have been unable to defend the many gold medals they have won.

Medals in different disciplines

A rare distinction has been for versatile athletes to win medals in more than one discipline. Usually, this happens in closely related sports (for example, cross-country skiing and Nordic combined), but some combinations relatively unknown in RL have been surprisingly common in the NS world (such as the totally unrelated disciplines of aerials and moguls skiing, artistic and rhythmic gymnastics, sprint and synchronised swimming, and various types of cycling).

For brevity's sake, the Summer Olympic table excludes the astonishingly large number of gymnasts who have won medals in artistic and rhythmic gymnastics (and sometimes trampoline); while this combination is completely unknown in RL, in the NationStates Olympics it is very common. Also excluded are the large numbers of equestrian riders to have won medals in two or even three of the dressage, eventing, and jumping of them; this appears to include virtually the entire population of Cafundéu.

The list includes Connor da Vincho, perhaps the most famous multisport competitor in NationStates history; his winning medals in four sports was helped by his competing in about fifty different events. He has since competed for Kenavt in virtually every major sporting competition, typically as the star of that particular team, all the while remaining 19 years old. Juan de la Cierva of Edward City also won medals in four disciplines, while his compatriot Pedro Bermejo is believed to be the only Olympic gold medalist in three different disciplines (all within the cycling sport).

Additionally, the list does not contain those athletes who won medals in markedly different events nonetheless classed as the same discipline: for example, Bulgislavian sprinter/middle distance runner/pole vaulter Tristiano Droga won medals in three very distinct sports, all classified under "athletics". Taking these into account, NationStates Olympic athletes clearly show far greater versatility, especially in events such as shooting (pistol, rifle, shotgun) or swimming (different strokes), than do RL competitors: this may be attributable to cultural values (such as the supremacy of Cassadagan female athletes), non-human physiologies (such as the dextrous bears of Roumberre), or simply be a quirk of the NS universe.

Notes

  1. ^ Andresen was also part of the artistic gymnastics team.
  2. ^ Five of the six members of the team were the same through the first three Olympic Games; Josh Vidic defended his gold medal at the Second Summer Olympics but was replaced in the team by Ih Wal for the Third. An entirely new set of gymnasts would also win the team gold at the Fifth Summer Olympics.
  3. ^ Four of the six members of the team were the same through the first three Olympic Games; Sandrine Berthier and Elu Sis replaced April Smithson and Hope Mathijsen for the Third Summer Olympics.
  4. ^ Four members of the team remained the same between the Second and Third Summer Olympics: Aliw Set, Anaïs Reed, Laure Mkrchyan and the indefatigable Sunny Mokhobo. Amazingly, given the difference in the disciplines, these were the same four gymnasts that also twice defended the artistic all-around team gold.
  5. ^ Bamerindus was the only individual who was a member of both teams.
  6. ^ The Bamerinduses were the only individuals on both teams.
  7. ^ Antônio Carlos Bamerindus was the only individual on every team. Marcos Paulo Bamerindus, Heitor Marinho and Anne Khalmar were all members of the team for the Third, Fourth and Fifth Summer Olympics. This makes Bamerindus the only Olympian in history to win four consecutive gold medals in the same event.
  8. ^ While the team defended its gold medal, the gap in Bedistani time as perceived in the Unified Capitalizt States makes it unlikely that any players personally defended their medals.
  9. ^ No iteration of the team had the same members, nor did any one swimmer actually win three golds. Guidry and Comas defended their medals at the Third Summer Olympics; Bernard Destry joined the team then and defended his medal at the Fourth; and his brother Phillipe Destry was on the team at the Second and Fourth, but not at the Third.
  10. ^ It is not known whether the same crew was involved in both competitions.
  11. ^ No individual was a member of both teams.
  12. ^ Maiden won gold in the "middleweight" freestyle class at the First Summer Olympics.
  13. ^ Mokhobo, part of both the Ariddian artistic and rhythmic teams that won consecutive gold medals in their team/group events, is the only person to defend a gold medal in three different events in Olympic history.
  14. ^ Mwakingwe had previously won gold in the now defunct "lightweight" judo weight class at the First Summer Olympics, making her the only judoka to win three gold medals at the Olympic Games.
  15. ^ Rosa had won a gold medal in a weight class that was abolished after the First Summer Olympics (in this case, "heavyweight"). She is the only weightlifter to win three Olympic gold medals.
  16. ^ Thomas and Gray competed as Independent Athletes at the Fifth Summer Olympics, but officially represented Liventia in the Sixth Summer Olympics.
  17. ^ No iteration of the team had the same members, nor did any one cyclist win three golds. Melissa Rockard defended her medal at the Fifth Summer Olympics, and Susanne Deridoy joined the team then and defended her medal at the Sixth.
  18. ^ Taric is an Ad'ihani athlete, but competed for the Combined Team at the Fifth Winter Olympics, and similarly at the Fifth Summer Olympics. At the Sixth Winter Olympics, he competed for his home nation.
