This is an article about an ancient nation of Iievius. For the past incarnation of this nation as a puppet state of Fal'shia, visit Iievius(Puppet); for its current incarnation as the Ruins, see Ruins of Iievius.

The Empire of Iievius (commonly known as the Empire, the 'Six Isles', the EI, or Iievius, and sometimes referred to by the Fifth Dominion as the Seventh Dominion, despite evidence by historians which contradicts this) is a sovereign state located off the north western coast of the 'E.H' continent that originated as a group of escapees from the Roman Empire. Over time, the refuges evolved in their use of technology and their knowledge of the sciences. They emerged in the medieval era as a major power in the area of the Nine Dominions, beginning their rise to power as a small nation that had major political and military power. The Empire also contains the nations of Koruon, Kvotharion, Elfaer, and other small islands in the Farier Sea. Recently, after a vicious spate of wars in the region, Iievius gained control of the territory of Hilltop Island and Greater Iievian Fishia from the iron grip of the continental nations. A relatively new nation, the sphere of Iievius' influence remains solidly within the region. Neighboring nations include Fal'shia to the southeast and Izsha directly to the west of Iievius.

The Empire of Iievius is a unitary state governed under a semi-constitutional monarchy and a parliamentary system, with its seat of government in the capital city of Iupitus. It is a country in its own right and consists of four nations: Iievius, Koruon, Elfaer and Kvotharion. There are three devolved national administrations, each with varying powers, situated in Koruon, Doronse and Dos; the capitals of Koruon, Elfaer and Kvotharion respectively. Associated with the EI, but not constitutionally part of it, are two Crown Dependencies and one overseas territory. These are remnants of wars that the Empire participated in, which at its height in 2030, encompassed almost a quarter of the region's land surface and was the one of the largest empires in the region's history.

Iievian influence can still be observed in the language, culture and legal systems of many of its former territories. Iievius stills celebrates the 7th of December as Iievius National Day, remembering the signing of the Treaty of Union by the leaders of the Six Isles on the 7th of December, 1343, when the royals declared all of the Farier Islands united under the banner of Iievius; once more, those who were once part of Iievius returned to its safe harbors, and the day when the united Empire first truly came into being.

The EI is a developed country and has the continent's fourth-largest economy by nominal GDP and third-largest economy by purchasing power parity. It was the continent's first industrialised country and the Farier Sea's foremost power during the 13th and early 14th centuries. The EI remains a great power with leading economic, cultural, military, scientific and political influences. It has been recognised as a nuclear weapons state, and its military expenditure ranks third or fourth in the continent. The EI has been a permanent member of the E.H. Security Council since its first session in 2012; it is also a member of the Farien Union, the Council of Polaris, and the Region Trade Organization.

Geography

The Empire

The total area of the Iievius Empire is approximately 24,916 square kilometres. The country occupies the major part of the Northwestern Isles archipelago and includes the island of Iievius. It lies between the Great West Arctic Ocean and the Farier Sea with the south-east coast coming within 125 kilometres of the coast of northern Fal'shia, from which it is separated by the Wish Channel. As of 2031, 47% of the EI was forested or mountainous, 19% used for pastures and 34% used for agriculture.

Iievius

Iievius accounts for just over half of the total area of the EI, covering 13,755 square kilometres. Most of the country consists of highland terrain, with mountainous terrain West of the Zax-Col line; including the Nasten Mountains of the Siraph District, the Perrives and stone hills of the Toma District, and the Chevier Range in the state of Therra. The main rivers and estuaries are the Capital, Devnier and the Mineire-Bextem. Iievius' highest mountain is Mt Dieram (1563 metres) in the Siraph District. Its principal rivers are the Devnier, Capital, Mineire, Bextem, Vane, Panner and Som.

Environment

Overview

Although most of Iievius is mountainous or highland, it includes a diverse range of habitats from lowland valleys to sweeping plains, and is recognised as a mega diverse country. Because of the islands' extremely variable weather patterns, and long-term geographic isolation, much of Iievius' biota is unique and diverse. About 85% of flowering plants, 84% of mammals, more than 45% of birds, and 89% of in-shore, polar-zone fish are endemic. Iievius has the greatest number of unique mammals of any country, with 355 species.

Fauna and Flora

The Iievian Snow Crow, or the Corvus candidus, also known as the candidutas bird, is a unique bird that lives only in the north of Iievius.
Forests dominate much of Iievius, particularly cedar and spruce trees in the colder regions and higher altitudes, pines replace them in southern regions and coasts as the most dominant species. Among well-known Iievian fauna are the Irvires (the Avir , Farshir, Evir, etc.); a host of marsupials, including the dovorua, nilfox, and vandaroo, and birds such as the 'snow crow' or candidutas and the temerier falcon. Iievius is home to many dangerous animals including some of the most fierce carnivores in the world. The nilarite was introduced by Tordite people who traded with Ancient Iievians around 400 A.D.
A crystallized spire of Kineticium, which in such a form is valued as a gem.
Many plant and animal species became extinct soon after first human settlement, including the Iievian Gigantir; others have disappeared since industrialisation, among them the koravine.

Environmental Protection

Many of Iievius' ecoregions, and the species within those regions, were once threatened by human activities and introduced plant and animal species. The Royal Environmental Restoration and Biodiversity Protection Act 1979 is the legal framework for the protection of threatened species. Numerous protected areas have been created under the Imperial Strategy for the Conservation of Iievius' Biological Diversity to protect and preserve unique ecosystems; 37 valleys are listed under the Jacantar Convention, and 16 natural Regional Heritage Sites have been established. Iievius was ranked fifth of 29 countries in the continent on the 2029 Environmental Performance Index.

Climate Change

Climate change has become an increasing concern in Iievius in recent years, with many Iievians considering protection of the environment to be the most important issue facing the country.

The Connor Ministry has initiated several emission reduction activities; Connor's first official act, on his first day in office, was to sign the petition for cutting global warming. Nevertheless, Iievius' carbon dioxide emissions per capita are only just beginning to diminish, lower than those of only a few other major industrialised continental nations. Rainfall in Iievius has slightly increased over the past century, both nationwide and for two quadrants of the nation, while annual mean temperatures increased significantly over the past decades. Many Iievians fear the melting of the poles, as Iievius is a major tourist stopping spot for those who wish to see the Arctic.

National Resources

The mountains of Iievius are naturally rich in minerals and high in resources. Recently, a mining boom was started due to the discovery of Kineticium, and the mountain towns are mostly mining towns. The forests of Iievius provide large amounts of lumber, as well as creating a fresh, clean, mountain environment.

History

Main article: History of the Iievian Empire

Archaic Iievius

At the Advent of the New Religion, Christianity, a small sect of 'heretic atheists', in truth followers of the Kyceirist religion, had escaped from the oppressive lands of the Roman Empire, which had taken and absorbed the new cult like a sponge, until the religion had pervaded the country to the core and the Emperor Constantine had obvious favour for the New Religion. The escapees soon had fled to a cold, almost freezing, isolated island, landing at what would become the city of Aescol, floated there by broken boat and driftwood, living, creating new technologies, and becoming a civilized, intelligent, culture, all in isolation until the forces of new technology that had appeared years before its time, an Orbital Weapons Platform, in 1167, drove Iievius to action.
Modern Datrij, a huge crater lake after the Faherian attack

The OWP had been in the possession of the nation called Faherian, which was extending it's borders and utilizing the deadly technology they had found under the sea in the ruined underwater city of Atlantis without pause. At one point the Faherian colonists had discovered Iievius, and when faced with a force superior to their own, even with their stolen technology, they resorted to their last weapon and blasted the City of Datrij, the seat of power, into a huge crater, which soon filled with water and became the famous Dragon Eye. At this calling of lightning and fire, the Iievians , though afraid of these magicks, retaliated with force and wiped out the nation. They occupied the nation, took their technologies, and returned to Iievius, now aware of the dangers that were presented to them from the Outside.

Integration

Iievius realized it had to expand to survive, and by 1343 Iievius had occupied the North-western Islands of the Farier Sea and had finished analysing the basic technologies brought from Faherian, though the advanced technologies such as planes and spaceships still escaped their understanding, creating new cities and a sprawling technological metropolis, Iupitus, to lead their country as the new capital. Though Iievius was technologically advanced, the machines were reserved for the rich and the technology did not expand into weapons; this can be seen in many depictions of battles at the time, where weapons of a medieval make were used. Some of the more notable conquests included the conquest of the Tordites in Davinius I's reign, and his construction of the huge bridge, Ocean Step, that remains today as the longest bridge in the region, Haven Bridge, as well as the failed attempt to seize Upt from the Fal'shians; what many view as the true beginning of the infamous rivalry between the two countries.

After the occupation and invasion of the Islands, The House of Iievius was overthrown by Jax of Gariol, a noble from the Royal Family, who upstaged the royal family with his rebel sect of farmers, known infamously as the Green Tunics. Iievius fell into stagnation, and though they had brilliant technologies such as cars and trains and ships and electricity, Iievius had made no progress until many years later, when the Gariol Dynasty was destroyed and the House of Iievius had returned with Lorainus of Iievius.
Prince Viridus on the left, with a banner, leads the Iupitus Guard against the Green Tunics at the Battle of Neva Plain.

After the return of the royals, progress returned, and the scientists began to focus on health and architecture rather than advancing appliances or weaponry, due to an event in 1834, when an experiment gone wrong resulted in an explosion that destroyed most of Industrial Aescol, though thankfully no ancient or culturally significant structures were destroyed. By 1854 Iievius had developed the equivalent of modern technology, but held off on advancing further, due to the dangers of other nations who had become jealous at Iievius's advancement.

At the twentieth century Iievius had fallen into a relaxed nature and felt safe enough to reach out and communicate with the outside world, beginning with Davatria, and shared their technologies, until the western parts of the continent had all progressed to a level similar to that of Iievius.

Modern Day

By the twenty-first century, Iievius had recognized the need to move forward as other, larger countries overtook them, and technology began to progress once again, at an unbelievable speed due to their Faherian technologies. During the beginnings of the reboot of technologies, the famous Great Schism War occurred, and Iievius was razed to the ground by the huge armies of Davatria and Fal'shia when assisting their ally, the Fifth Dominion. Iievius was dubbed 'The Unlucky Country' after this event, a black joke on the many times that the country has been destroyed, the most notable of which were the destruction of Datrij and the recent Schism War. Iievius and Davatria never returned to the good terms they once had and Fal'shia became a neutral state. However, war still loomed on the horizon in the aftermath of the Schism War, with the famous Division occurring just seventeen years later, when several countries, including Iievius, cut ties with the Old Continent.

Soon however, good relationships returned, but within three years tensions arose again when the small nation of Skypower decided to ignore the rules of engagement established by the EH Assembly.
The first attack on Dos, capital of Kvotharion, as it is sieged by the Lik'dori
This resulted in the spark of a great war, the Fifth Dominion taking the opportunity to expand and the nation of Old North Fish priming itself to take on the military might of the Iievius Empire. As Iievius celebrated its victory in Skypower, Old North Fish attacked, with Izsharian forces. However, Iievius responded quickly and pushed back the invading forces, counter-attacking the offensive Old North Fish. Though the Fishians held up some resistance, their measly, overestimated military was quickly defeated and Iievius began a thorough occupation of Old North Fish. Eventually extenuating circumstances had Old North Fish restored as an individual nation, but Iievius was able to restrict its military power and retained the Fleminium-rich Hilltop Island.

After the events of the war, the holocaust which would give the war the moniker of The Calamity War began. An alien species landed with the intention of 'purifying the planet' before the 'Eclipse' came. Known as the Lik'dori, from the planet of Kalmior, their super carrier wiped out three of the foremost fleets in the continent with a single attack. They first landed in Iievius, and the army of the Empire was defeated quickly. Iievius was forced to evacuate the entire country as the Lik'dori were known to 'assimilate' humans into their ranks. Soon the entire continent joined in war against the Lik'dori, combining to form the Planet Guard, but the 'Triple Alliance' of Davatria, Salviur, and Slethus joined the Lik'dori in the name of their religion, Skysm. The Lik'dori were pushed out by a conjoined effort on the part of the Planet Guard, and the Triple Alliance paid the price for its war crimes.

The Empire of Iievius played an influential role in the Great Northern War, carving out a piece of land on the continent. The aftermath of several royal assassinations in the Fishian royal line led to Iievian rule of the throne due to royal relations. This devolved into war between the Fifth Dominion and Iievius, both worried about the others increasing power in the continent. In the aftermath of the first war Scalaw was lost to the Dominion forces, who then returned it to a Fishian independence group calling themselves the Fishian Republican Party. These then proceeded to wage war on the new Iievian states of Greater Iievian Fishia, but lost the conflict.

Politics

General

Iupitus, modern metropolis and the capital.
The Empire of Iievius is a unitary state under a constitutional monarchy. King-Emperor Francis I is the head of state of the nation of Iievius as well as of 6 other independent Empire countries. The monarch itself is political, unlike the more common symbolic figurehead, and has "the right to be advise, the right to command, the right to punish, and the right to decline." The Empire of Iievius has a constitution, a single document which is amended over time; it is the main law-enforcer.

Government

The EI has a parliamentary government based on the Westminster system . The parliament of the Empire of Iievius that meets in the Kaltur Palace has two chambers; an elected House of Soils and an appointed Senate. Any bill passed requires Royal Assent to become law. It is the ultimate legislative authority in the Empire since the devolved parliament in Koruon as well as the devolved assemblies in Kvotharion and Elfaer are not sovereign bodies and could, theoretically, be abolished by the EI parliament. The position of prime minister, the EI's head of government, belongs to the member of parliament who can obtain the confidence of a majority in the House of Soils, usually the current leader of the largest political party in that chamber.

Cabinet

The prime minister and cabinet are formally appointed by the monarch to form His Majesty's government, though the prime minister chooses the cabinet and, by convention, HM The Prince respects the prime minister's choices. The cabinet is traditionally drawn from members of the Prime Minister's party in both legislative houses, and mostly from the House of Soils, to which they are responsible. Executive power is exercised by the prime minister and cabinet, all of whom are sworn into the Privy Council of the Empire, and become Ministers of the Crown. The Rt. Hon. James Connor, leader of the Labour Party, has been Prime Minister, First Lord of the Treasury and Minister for the Civil Service since 11 May 2029. For elections to the House of Soils, the EI is currently divided into 4 states with each electing twenty-four members of parliament by simple plurality. General elections are called by the monarch when the prime minister so advises. The Parliament Acts of 1911 and 1949 require that a new election must be called within six years of the previous general election.
Kaltur Palace, where the royal family resides, as well as the hosting place of the Parliament.

Parties

The EI's three major political parties are the National Party, the Labour Party and the Liberal Party. During the 2010 general election, these three parties won 87 out of 96 seats available in the House of Soils; 86 seats at the 2029 general election; and one more at the delayed by-election in Mirel and Miniere. Most of the remaining seats were won by minor parties that only contest elections in one part of the EI: the Koruon National Party (Koruon only); Elfaer Democrats (Elfaer only); and the Democratic Unionist Party, Social Democratic Party, National Environmentalist Party (The Envos), and Miark Haelm (Kvotharion only, though the party also has seats in the Tordi Archipelago).

In accordance with party policy no elected Miark Haelm member of parliament has ever attended the House of Soils to speak on behalf of their constituents – this is because members of parliament are required to take an oath of allegiance to the monarch, and the Tordi Archipelago is and independent protectorate. The current five Miark Helm MPs have however, since 2007, made use of the offices and other facilities available at Kaltur.

Justice and Law

The Empire of Iievius does not have a single legal system, as Article 19 of the 1343 Treaty of Union provided for the continuation of Koruon's separate legal system. Today the EI has two distinct systems of law; Iievian law, and Koruan law. The Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, including the same members as the Supreme Court, is the highest court of appeal for several independent Empire countries, the Iievian Overseas Territories, and the Crown Dependencies. Both Iievian law, which applies in Iievius, Elfaer and Kvotharion, and Koruan law are based on common-law principles. The essence of common law is that, subject to statute, the law is developed by judges in courts, applying statute, precedent and common sense to the facts before them to give explanatory judgments of the relevant legal principles, which are reported and binding in future similar cases (stare decisis).

The courts of Iievius, Elfaer and Koruon are headed by the Senior Courts of Iievius, Elfaer and Kvotharion, consisting of the Court of Appeal, the High Court of Justice (for civil cases) and the Crown Court (for criminal cases). The Supreme Court is the highest court in the land for both criminal and civil appeal cases in all countries, and any decision it makes is binding on every other court in the same jurisdiction, often having a persuasive effect in other jurisdictions.

Crime in Iievius, Kvotharion and Elfaer increased in the period between 1981 and 1995, though since that peak there has been an overall fall of 634% in crime from 1995 to 2030, according to crime statistics. The prison population of Iievius, Elfaer and Kvotharion has almost diminished to zero over the same period, to just over 34, giving the three nations one of the highest rates of non-incarceration in E.H at 1 per 1,000,000. His Majesty's Prison Service, which reports to the Ministry of Justice, manages most the prison in those countries Koruon's prisons and incarceration rates are largely similar to the three other states.

Iievius has a market economy with high GDP per capita and low rate of poverty. Ranked third in the Index of Regional Economic Freedom (2029), Iievius is the regions's fifth largest economy and has the fourth highest per capita GDP; higher than that of the Fifth Dominion, Fal'shia, Alfalshi, and Tiebetan China. The country was ranked second in the E.H Assembly's 2029 Human Development Index and first in Guroyne's 2018 Prosperity Index. The Imperial Jewel is the currency for the nation, including Koruon, Elfaer, and Kvotharion, as well as the independent island states of Havai, Choveieru, and Doveri, in the Tordi Archipelago. After the 2016 merger of the Iievian Stock Exchange and the Siraph Exchange, the Imperial Iievius Stock Exchange is now the third largest in the region.

All of Iievius' major cities fare well in global comparative "liveability" surveys; Aescol reached first place on The E.H Economist's 2031 Region's Most Livable Cities list, followed by Iupitus, Therra, and Siraph in sixth, eighth, and 15th places, respectively. Total government debt in Iievius is about J9 billion. Iievius has low median house prices and some of the lowest household debt levels in the world.

Growth

An emphasis on exporting manufactured goods and commodities has underpinned a significant increase in Iievius' terms of trade since the start of the century, due to rising commodity prices. Iievius has a balance of payments that is more than 7 per cent of GDP negative, and has had persistently large current account deficits for more than 50 years. Iievius has grown at an average annual rate of 9.6 per cent for over 15 years, in comparison to the ORECD annual average of 2.5 per cent.

There are differing opinions as to whether Iievius had been one of the few ORECD nations to avoid experiencing a recession during the late 2000s global financial downturn. Six of Iievius's major trading partners had been in recession which in turn affected Iievius, and economic growth was hampered significantly over recent years, though within the past decade Iievian growth has ballooned rapidly.

The Jarvis Government floated the Imperial Jewel in 1983 and partially deregulated the financial system. The Doward Government followed with a partial deregulation of the labour market and the further privatisation of state-owned businesses, most notably in the telecommunications industry. The indirect tax system was substantially changed in July 2004 with the introduction of a 10 per cent Goods and Services Tax (GST). In the Iievius tax system, personal and company income tax are the main sources of government revenue.

Employment

In July 2031, there were 870,500 people unemployed, with an unemployment rate of 3.8 per cent. Youth unemployment (15–24) dropped from 3.9 per cent to 2.7 per cent over 2028–2029. Over the past decade, inflation has typically been 2–3 per cent and the base interest rate 5–6 per cent.

Distribution

The service sector of the economy, including tourism, education, and financial services, accounts for about 60 per cent of GDP. Rich in natural resources, Iievius is a major exporter of mineral products, particularly Kineticium and copper and other minerals such as iron-ore and gold, and energy in the forms of liquefied natural gas and coal, which it does not use but rather sells to other major industrial countries. Although natural resources account for only 9 per cent of GDP respectively, they contribute substantially to export performance. Iievius' largest export markets are Old North Fish, Davatria, the Fifth Dominion, Fal'shia, and Izsha. Iievius is the region's largest exporter of cheese, in an industry contributing $12.5 billion per annum to the nation's economy.

Military

General

The Empire fields one of the most technologically advanced and best trained armed forces in the world and as of 2023 maintained at least 20 military deployments around the globe. According to various sources, including the Ministry of Defence, the EI has the fourth-highest military expenditure in the region, despite only having the 7th largest military in terms of manpower. Total defence spending currently accounts for 22.5% of total national GDP.

The Iievian Army, Royal Air Force, Royal Navy and Royal Astronomical Navy are collectively known as the Iievian Armed Forces and officially as His Majesty's Armed Forces. The Iievian Armed Forces are charged with protecting the EI and its overseas territories, promoting the EI's global security interests and supporting international peacekeeping efforts. They are active and regular participants in the EH Assembly Armed Forces, including the AoO Rapid Reaction Corps, as well as other region wide coalition operations.

The four forces are managed by the Ministry of Defence and controlled by the Defence Council, chaired by the Secretary of State for Defence.
An IL17 Pulse Laser Service Rifle.
The EI maintains the largest space navy in the P.S and tied third-largest in the Continent. In early 2032 the Iievian Army had a reported strength of 27,025,327, the Royal Air Force had 43,300 personnel and the Navy 38,160.

Overseas garrisons and facilities are maintained in Hilltop Island, Old North Fish, the Tordi Archipelago, and Skypower. Despite the Empire's military capabilities, recent defence policy has a stated assumption that "the most demanding operations" will be undertaken as part of a coalition where possible. Setting aside the intervention in Skypower, EI military operations in Davatria, Old North Fish, Izsha, and, most recently, the coalition effort against Kalmior, have followed this approach. The last war in which the Iievian military fought alone was the Eastern War of 1982, in which both sides were forced to peace by intervention from the Fifth Dominion.

Navy

The Royal Navy, or the 'wet navy', as it is informally known, is a blue-water (expeditionary) navy, currently one of only three (with the Davatrian Navy and the Fifth Dominion Navy) in the region. The Ministry of Defence signed contracts worth J3.2 billion to build two new super carrier-sized aircraft carriers on 3 July 2028. As an island nation, the navy of Iievius is well developed, but is being phased out by advancements in space.

Air Force

The Royal Air Force is a major part of Iievius' military and is one of the most advanced in the world. They can boast the Thunderstrike fighter and the Vendetta stealth bomber, both some of the best planes in the business. Iievius does not focus very much on the air force, as with the introduction of space fleets air is less and less important.

Army

The Basic Infantry Forces, or riflemen, of the Iievian Army, are issued IL17 pulse laser rifles and LCC30 and 50 light support rapid fire laser weaponry, and specially trained shock troopers are also issued IL17s, though the out-dated AM20s and G46s are yet to be fully phased out. As the IL17 can be modified to snipe, this allows the units to be adaptive. Full time Snipers are issued Basilisk 50. Sniper rifles, which are usually used in prone position or mounted on a tripod due to its size.
Troops in action at Notherra South Military Training Base.
The famous SS and Special Forces are given IL17Ks and bayonets for close range fighting.

All members of the army are issued Light Kineticium Armour, supported by Kevlar weaved Kineticium threads as a base, and the famous Shockproof Omnifunction Helmets MKII, known for their lock-on, installed radios, night-vision, internet access, cloaking scan, and multiple other useful functions. The most famous use of the Shockproof Omnifunction Helmet was when one private ripped it off his head, and slammed it on top of a grenade, saving him and several others from injury. The helmet was unharmed, though the interior was charred and the Internet was no longer accessible. Many soldiers prefer to keep their helmets when they retire from active service, as a memento of their time in service and as a useful portable computer that can access the Internet from anywhere.

A new cavalry corps has been introduced that is able to be utilized in modern combat due to the mount's new armour and speed, in which the Riders, as they are called, ride Neo Femriats, which were a genetically created breed that was based around the mythical Femriat of Kyceir mythology. They utilize vancels for close-quarters combat, which are designed for compact use, and are relatively light, though they are not designed to stand up to such weapons as long swords or axes, relying on the Femriat's speed to close in, kill the enemy, and leave immediately. The Femriat's own natural armaments serve as the Rider's heavy weaponry.

Space Navy

New developments have led to a comprehensive space force spearheaded by new technology and spacecraft, now catching up quickly with larger nations. The standard ships are the Phalanx fighter, the upgraded Barrage elite fighter, the Stryker interceptor, the Creeper kamikaze droids, and the famous 'Overkill', command-class ships, are the Chevaliers. Iievius can also boast an impressive number of spy satellites and is known for its advanced orbital space ports and docks. Iievius is maintaining two non-military space-stations, but up to twenty more are in military use.

Special and Reserve Forces

A single opera mask released by the government to be an authentic ASCOU mask.
The Empire Special Forces, such as the ASCOU and the Special Space Service, provide troops trained for quick, mobile, military responses in counter-terrorism, land, maritime, amphibious and orbital operations, often where secrecy or covert tactics are required. The most famous, or perhaps infamous of the units is the ASCOU, renowned as the boogeymen of Iievius' enemies. Reserve forces supporting the active military are also considered a special branch of the military. These include the Army Reserve, the Royal Naval Reserve, Royal Space Marines Reserve and the Royal Auxiliary Air Force. Active and reserve duty military personnel total approximately 65,228,370 units.

Demographics

For generations, the islands were isolated and unknown, and the people of Iievius are still mainly of indigenous Tordite-Roman ethnic origin. In the 2029 Iievian census, the most commonly nominated ancestry was Iievian (46.13 per cent), followed by Davatrian (19 per cent), Dominionite (13 per cent), Fishian (11 per cent), Fal'shian (4 per cent), Izsharian (4 per cent), and Other (3 per cent).

Immigration

Iievius' population has quadrupled since the end of the Schism War, much of the increase from immigration. Following the Schism War and through to 2030, almost 5.9 million of the total population settled in the country as new immigrants, meaning that many Iievians were born overseas. Most immigrants are skilled, but the immigration quota includes categories for family members and refugees. By 2050, Iievius' population is currently projected to reach around 502 million.

In 2029, 2.31 per cent of Iievians were born overseas; the five largest immigrant groups were those from the Fifth Dominion, Davatria, Old North Fish, Fal'shia, and Izsha. Following the abolition of the Human Iievius policy in 1773, numerous government initiatives have been established to encourage and promote racial and inter-species harmony based on a policy of multiculturalism, with the Izsharians finally able to enter Australia in masses. In 2025–26, more than 131,000 people emigrated to Iievius, mainly from Davatria and the Fifth Dominion. The migration target for 2010–11 is 168,700, compared to 67,900 in 1998–99.

Language

Although Iievius' official language is Iievian, English is so entrenched that it has become the de facto secondary national language, with Latin coming a close third after English. Iievian English is a major variety of the language with a distinctive accent and lexicon. Grammar and spelling are similar to that of British English with some notable exceptions. According to the 2029 census, English is the only language other than Iievian spoken in the home for close to 89 per cent of the population. The next most common languages spoken at home are Latin (74.6 per cent), Greek (1.3 per cent) and Cantonese (1.2 per cent); a considerable proportion of Iievian children are trilingual due to the persistence of Latin in use by Tordite-Romans, which has bled into the migrant community as well, in addition to Iievian and English. A 2030–2031 study by the Iievius Early Development Index found that the most common language spoken by children after Iievian was English, followed by Latin, Greek, Chinese, and Hindi.

Due to the origin of the Iievian people from the Roman Empire, the original language of the Tordites, who were the only major trade link Iievius had at the time, and Latin, which the Iievians brought with them, merged to become a sort of pidgin language, with an essentially Latin syntax and grammar with 'a bad Tordite accent' and some Tordite words that fit with the grammar. This eventually changed over time to become Old Iievian, though many Latinate words still remain in the vocabulary. As such, many upper class families teach their children Latin and speak Latin within the home, as well as Tordite. However, Old Iievian itself has fallen into disuse and is almost a dead language, though some Tordites still speak it and many Siraphians still profess knowledge of the language. Old Iievian is offered as a 'classical' language at most Iievian schools, though most classical language students pick the much more popular Latin, which is often used in everyday life.

New Iievian, or just Iievian, however, remains the language of Iievius. Many tourists profess it quite bemusing to have slang-happy Iievian English speakers one second and what seems to be intelligent scholars of Latin the next. However, teachers and professors of Latin around the globe often bring pupils to Iievius in order to find an environment where Latin is a part of everyday life; to immerse themselves in the last nation still upholding several Roman traditions.

Religion

Iievius has no state religion. However, despite this fact, Kyceirism is so entrenched that it is the de facto religion, and most believe that the government maintains its stance only to avoid offending people. In the 2029 census, 64 per cent of Iievians listed themselves as Kyceirist, including 26 per cent as Kilsham Devotes and 19 per cent as Anturian Kyceirists. About 19 per cent of the population cited "No religion" (which includes humanism, atheism, agnosticism and rationalism), which was the fastest-growing group from 2021 to 2026, and a further 12 per cent did not answer (the question is optional) or did not give a response adequate for interpretation. The largest non-Kyceirist religion in Iievius is Christianity (2.1 per cent), followed by Buddhism (1.7 per cent), Islam (0.8 per cent) and Hinduism (0.5 per cent). Overall, fewer than 6 per cent of Iievians identify with non-Kyceirist religions.

An international survey, made by the private, not-for profit Elfaen think-tank, the Navelmann Foundation, found that "Iievius is one of the least religious nations in the region, coming in 17th out of 21 [countries] surveyed" and that "Nearly three out of four Iievius say they are either not at all religious or that religion does not play a central, major, role in their lives.". A survey of 1,718 Iievians by the Kyceirist Research Association at the end of 2009 suggested that the numbers of people attending religious services per month in Iievius has dropped from 23 per cent of believers in 2003 to 16 per cent in 2029, and while 60 per cent of 15 to 29-year-old respondents in 2003 identified with Kyceirist denominations, 33 per cent did in 2029. Many Iievians are slowly moving towards atheism or the more popular agnosticism and humanism.

Health

Life expectancy in Iievius in 2026 was 88.7 years for males and 93.5 years for females. Iievius has one of the lowest rates of cancer in the region, though quite high on world statistics, while cigarettes are the largest preventable cause of death and disease. Iievius has one of the lowest proportions of overweight citizens among developed nations.

Total expenditure on health (including private sector spending) is around 13.8 per cent of GDP. Iievius introduced universal health care in 1975. Known as HelpHealth it is now nominally funded by an income tax surcharge known as the Health levy, currently set at 1.5 per cent. The states manage hospitals and attached outpatient services, while the Empire funds the Chemist Benefits Plan (reducing the costs of medicines) and general practice.
