Gymnastics at the Fourth Summer Olympics were held over a the course of the entire Games, from September 8 to September 30.

Venue
The multisport arenas built into the upper floors of the Olympic Tower hosted all of the gymnastics events.
Competition Format
Three distinct disciplines make up the Olympic sport of gymnastics: artistic, rhythmic, and trampolining.
Artistic
The Aeropag Olympics saw a change in the apparatus used for the artistic gymnastic events. Where previously, both men and women had used the same groups of apparatus, they were now split along traditional gender lines, with the men using six pieces (vault, floor, high bar, parallel bars, pommel, and rings) and the women four (vault, floor, beam, and asymmetric bars).
Rhythmic
Rhythmic gymnastics in Aeropag consisted of men's and women's events, with individuals and groups judged on not only their movement, but their use of the additional apparatus (hoops, ribbons, ropes, and clubs). The men's group competition, however, does not use these apparatus.
Trampolining
Qualifying consisted of a technical and a "free" routine; the final was a simple free routine.
