The Elite League (aka. Hoogst Verbond) is the highest football league in Achtervolging.
Formed by Royal Decree shortly after unification of Achtervolging, the League started play in it's inaugural season on 31 August 2007. There is currently no league sponsor, in an effort to preserve the integrity of the league.
The League consists of 16 clubs. Each club faces every other club twice during the season, once at home and once away. At the end of each season, the bottom two clubs are automatically relegated to the second level of the Achtervolganian league system, the Second League, with the champion and second placed team of the Second League automatically promoted to the Elite League. The 14th placed club from the Elite League goes to separate promotion/relegation playoffs versus teams place 3rd, 4th, and 5th in the Second League. The 4 teams are randomly drawn into a two-leg semi-final playoff, with the winners of these facing off in a neutral-site championship game, the winner gaining the final Elite League position.
