The Bariyan War was a controversial conflict fought between the Peoples' Republic of BariyaKhem (later the Independent Bariyan Republic) and a joint force composed of soldiers from the Altani Federaton and the Lavinium Senate. In early November, Altani Vice President Aliri Margal was assassinated by agents of a terrorist organization founded and funded by a wealthy AlkebuLian named Amarantha Acacia, who was living in BariyaKhem under the protection of the fundamentalist government established by members of the radical "Northerner" sect originally founded by anti-Altani extremist Almotaleb bil'Aarsh. Federation officials demanded the Bariyan government hand over all those implicated in the assassination of Margal; their subsequent refusal marked the beginning of hostilities. The cause and justification for the war remains in dispute, and it has been repeatedly cited by critics of the Altani state as an example of their propensity for unilateral action and reckless interventionism. Altani nationalists, conversely, claim it as a symbol of the Altani commitment to human liberty and international security.
