Australien (officially the United Socialist States of Australien) is an island nation in the New Warsaw Pact region.

Australien is an island nation, inhabiting one small continent and several island territories. It's center and north is a predominantly desert region, whilst its south coast is very livable, if somewhat hilly, land. The east coast has many forests and mountains, whilst the north-east is dense jungle. Australien is a large nation, but much of its land is unsuitable for large human populations, however new technology and the growth of government services is making new land available for settlement. The population of Australien is at its highest ever level, just over 454 million, due to immigration, refugee surges and a high birth rate along with a low infant mortality rate.

Australien was initially a colony of several nations, most notably Lowell Leber. Australien gained Independence peacefully at the turn of the 19th/20th century (Official date and time was midday, January 1, 1900). Australien has retained very warm relations with Lowell Leber and has fought along side them in a number of armed conflicts, such as the Second Cataclysm.

Australien is a a Socialist Democracy, and describes itself as a Social-Capitalism. Australien takes an active role in affairs of the New Warsaw Pact, in which it serves as the minister for defence. It is one of the largest, and most powerful nations in the pact. Australien culture is similar to that of Lowell Leber, but with its own signifigant ideals, customs and social values.

History

Government

The Government of Australien is a parliamentary democracy, operating on three levels, Federal, State and Council, however only the federal government has a serious degree of legislative power. There is both an upper and lower house in the Federal Parliament, whilst state parliaments only contain one house of parliament, as this is all that is considered neccessary for their function. Australien labels itself as a "Socialist-Capitalism" or a "Communist-Capitalism" (Though the latter term is used for comic value, as Australien is not a communist nation). The system involves the state controlling all businesses, but allowing individuals to still create and run their own. This is aimed at preserving the competitive nature of capitalism, but ensuring profits go back to the state, and as such, the people. As the state retains overall control of all business, they can ensure the utmost degree of consumer rights and can, in theory, keep prices low. Any new major legislation (Which will be judged using a 'rating system', which rates the importance of any bills) is voted on by all citizens of Australien. An efficient system has been developed to cater for this, with votes being able to be cast online, by phone, SMS, or at any service station or police station. A preferential voting system is used to elect representatives at all levels of government (Though it is less relevant at the local council level, where there often may only be two cantidates). All citizens over the age of 18 are required to vote, a $250 fine is issued if a citizen does not vote without a valid reason.

Politics

Australien politics is dominated by left-wing groups, with center-left being the farthest right on the political scale that a party can go without becoming an extreme minority. Hung-Parliaments are a common sight, with no party successfully gaining over 30% of the vote since the 1989 elections (Which was just over a decade before the revolution, and two decades before the latest election, in 2009). Multiple coalitions have been formed in an attempt to both gain power and increase the productivity of the political system. The current ruling group is the CPPA (Coailition of the People's Parties of Australien), which won the election with a 46% percent majority over their nearest rivals, the ACP (Alliance of Center Parties), who recieved 30% of the vote, and the largest single party, the RPLA (Revolutionary Liberation Party of Australien), who recieved 14% of the vote.

The focus of government is almost always the "Community Welfare and Education Department", which is the department concerned primarily with the areas of Healthcare, education and Social Welfare, which recieve 20, 21 and 15 percent of all government funding respectively, amounting to over 56% of all government spending. Defence spending is constantly under review and debate. A surprising majority (Around 78%) of parliament agrees that it needs to be increased temporarily for modernisation and aquired new weapon systems. A smaller majority of 62% agrees that defence spending should increase from its current 13% of GDP level to 15-17%, whilst only 13% advocate a massive increase to 25-30% of GDP. Long-established social laws, government policies and stances are almost constantly being challenged in an effort to "Finish the Revolution", as it is put by most citizens.

Military

The Military of Australien, the ADF (Australien Defence Force) consists of approximately 1,564,321 soldiers, operating three branches: the Army, Navy and Airforce. The army maintains a rough two to one ratio of personelle to the other branches, with 751,311 soldiers to the Navy's 449,902 and the Airforce's 363,108. This means that there is approximately 1 active member of the armed forces for every 284 citizens. However, these figures are misleading, as Australien operates a large reserve force, named the "People's Reserve Force", which contains roughly the same amount of soldiers (1,533,128) as the regular armed forces, effectively doubling the personelle of the ADF if needed, though there is an approximate 4-1 ratio of Army reserves to the Airforce reserves or Navy Reserves.

The ADF is centered around the belief that flexibility, mobility and the ability to operate in any environment are the key factors in the effective defence of Australien. In order to streamline inter-branch communication and to increase combat-effectiveness on the ground, branches of the ADF only function seperately on an administrative basis. Units are grouped together at the Corps level (Or higher, depending on the unit in question) and operate together, communicating directly. This strategy has faced criticism in the past, it has been stated that this often leaves some units without any neccessary support whilst in combat, whilst other units wait in reserve with all the support assets at their disposal. In recent times, however, the system has been adjusted to allow for transferring and 'loaning' of support to other combat units by their commanding officer.

The ADF maintains the utmost standard of training. 'Mateship' is a strong ideal of all branches of the ADF, and is a key factor in the tenacious attitude of Australien troops. Any type of forced military service is illegal, and widely condemned by Australien, and this is a fact that members of the ADF are fiercely proud of. As all soldiers have chosen to serve in the ADF, morale is generally very high among troops.

Geography

Australien has an extremely varied geography, comprising mainly of a desert environment in the center and north of Australien, an often hilly south with moderate-high rainfall, a forested east coast, a jungle-covered north-east and various islands of varying landscape.

Climate

Summer tempreatures are generally high across the country. In the desert regions, tempreatures often reach up to the mid 50's, with an average of 43 degrees. The and south coasts tempreature can be anything from 30 to 50 degrees whilst the jungled north-east has an average summer tempreature of 37 degrees.

Winter tempreatures are a dramatic change on the south and east coast, where tempreatures can drop to 3 degrees, with an average of 19 degrees. The Jungles and deserts, however, retain an average heat of between 27 and 35 degrees.
