Austerland, officially the United Empire of Austerland (German: Vereinigt Reich von Österland), is a Federal Elective Monarchy and member state of the Byzantine Galactic Empire located in the north-eastern part of the Delta Quadrant in the Milky Way galaxy. The nation consists of twenty seven star systems and sixty three planets. It's capital and largest city is Vienna, which is located on the northern part of it's Home World, Ostara. With a population of four hundred and thirty eight billion inhabitants, Austerland is one of the most populous member states in the Byzantine Galactic Empire. It is also one of the major political, economic and military powers of the Delta Quadrant and a technological leader in many fields, including cybernetic and nano technology. Further more, it has developed a very high standard of living and a comprehensive social welfare system. It has also been the home of many influential scientists, artists and inventors, and is known throughout the galaxy for its cultural, political and military history.
The nations history began in 976, when Emperor Otto II created the March of Austerland to protect the eastern half of the Holy Roman Empire from Hungary. The March was initially under the control of Henry II, the Duke of Bavaria, but was given to the Babenbergs after he revolted against Emperor Otto II. The Babenbergs ruled the March until 1156, when Emperor Fredrick I issued the Privilegium Minus, which elevated the nation to a Duchy and separated it from Bavaria. After the death of the last Babenberg Duke, Fredrick II, in 1246, the Duchy entered a period of interregnum during which it was ruled by Ottokar II, the King of Bohemia. In 1278, Rudolf I, the King of Germany, gave the Duchy to his sons, Albert I and Rudolf II, after the execution of Ottokar II, beginning the six hundred and forty year reign of the Hapsburg dynasty. In 1359, the nation was elevated to an Archduchy when Prince Rudolf IV forged the Privilegium Maius to increase his power. The nation remained apart of the Holy Roman Empire until 1804, when, in response to the coronation of Napoleon I as Emperor of the French, the Austerian Empire was proclaimed by Francis II, the last Holy Roman Emperor.
Following it's defeat in World War I and the overthrow of Emperor Charles I in the November Revolution, the Austerian Empire was dissolved and replaced by the Federal Republic of Austerland. The Republican era saw some of the most significant technological achievements of the 20th century, including Ostara's first human spaceflight and the discovery of nuclear power. The Federal Republic collapsed and fell into anarchy in 2078, shortly after the end of World War III, when a large cloud of fallout destroyed the majority of it's arable land and killed over one fifth of it's population. After the collapse of Federal power, Austerland remained in anarchy until Maximilian Reinhardt, the warlord in control of the northern part of the country, conquered it in 2174 using a small army equipped with primitive pre-war power armour. The nation was re-established in 2208, shortly after the end of the Unification Wars, a series of conflicts in which Maximilian conquered the majority of Ostara, when he formed the United Empire of Austerland.
