Athletics at the Fourth Summer Olympics was held over the course of fifteen days, starting with the heats of the men's and women's 100m on September 16, and ending with the men's marathon on September 30. The medal ceremony of the men's marathon, as is tradition, was the last event in the Olympic Stadium prior to the closing ceremony.

Venues
The Olympic Tower Stadium was used for most events; the marathons and race walks, however, were held at ground level, on road courses around the artificial Coubertin Island on which the tower stands.
