The Arctic Ocean is the body of water which covers the Earth's North Pole and its surrounding area. Much of it is frozen all year round, and the climate is, obviously, polar. The temperature and salinity vary seasonally as ice melts and freezes. The Arctic Ocean, and the lands within it, experience near-continuous darkness throughout winter and continuous daylight in summer.
The smallest and shallowest of Earth's oceans, the Arctic is sometimes classified as a sea or as an estuary of the Atlantic Ocean. Alternatively, it can be seen as northernmost part of an all-encompassing World Ocean.
It should be noted that, whereas Antarctica is a continent, there is no major Arctic landmass.
Unlike the lands in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, which are teeming with human and non-human life, what little land can be found in the Arctic Ocean is mostly uninhabited. The Ariddian Arctic Islands, some of which are trapped in ice come winter, are a notable exception. The Resurgent Dream also possesses inhabited islands in the Arctic Ocean, consisting of the Province of Sannginivut, a majority Inuit province.
