The Maritime Empire of Antemyst (pronounced AN-teh-mist or an-TEH-mist) is a large nation occupying both a small atoll and several extraplanetary holdings. Located in the Ocean of Xaymaca, the atoll holds less than one percent of the nation's population and commands less than five percent of its economic production. Its acquisition of the planetary system Cyrna gave Antemyst the resources to become an economic powerhouse, and are the basis of its current success on an international level.

History

Pre-ruling eras

For as long as records show and memories can recall, the tiny atoll of Antemyst has been home to a small indigenous population. As the rest of the world was colonized and organized into nations, the families that lived on the atoll began to group and form unofficial governments. From here comes the tradition of being very unofficial in all matters; the family is still the primary and central unit in Antemyst, and in all matters save national ones, supersedes all other departments and organizations.

As the world around them grew smaller and the Antemystics began to interact with other cultures, they began to realize that they had developed quite different physically. Many Antemystic families had developed "superhuman" (to outsiders) abilities such as advanced strength, the ability to breathe underwater, and telekinesis. This they endeavored to hide from the neighboring nations at first. Not until Kenneth Fosterman, an immigrant, built a stable government out of the families' alliances was it decided that the nation should be forward about its citizens and their abilities.

The Kenneth Fosterman era

After living amongst the Antemystics for a time, Kenneth Fosterman began to notice the oddities in Antemystic life. For one, there was only a scant central government that did little; instead, families ruled themselves, and their policies varied widely.

Geography

The original atoll of Antemyst is located in the Ocean of Xaymaca. Its extraplanetary holdings are all in the Cyrna system, in the galactic North.

Kaya Antemyst

Kaya Antemyst ("the island of Antemyst" in Ateiaka) is a tiny atoll in a vast ocean. It has few resources and few residents. Its climate is arid, its air salty, and its seasons reduced to two: dry and drier. The capital of Antemyst is located here, on the seastead of Qumenee in the atoll's lagoon. Its economy is based heavily on tourism from around its region and beyond.

Moisant

The planet Moisant has a fairly tropical climate. Warm and flat, it is very livable and offers agriculture as a popular mainstay. Much of its economy is based on farming, as well as tourism, though there are natural resources to be had. Moisant is about fifty percent water, with large islands dotting its surface and forests, savannahs, and marshes on those islands.

Terminus

Terminus features the Ayiti, a large, cold, mountainous stretch of hinterland in the north. Nearer the equator the climate becomes more hospitable, with a band of damp, dark rainforests circling the surface. The south is largely water or ice, with a polar ice cap at the southern pole. The entire planet consists of mining opportunities for fuels, building materials, and precious metals.

Demographics

Population: ±2 billion

Life expectancy at birth

As Antemystics tend to live for hundreds of years, as detailed below, the life expectancy of any native is four hundred twelve years. For non-powered Antemystics born on the island, the life expectancy is about eighty years.

Races and ethnic groups

A largely homogenous state, most Antemystics are purely descended from their indigenous race. Others are descended from immigrants from nearby lands such as Almajoya and Snowy Egrets. Most of the citizens who are descended from natives are Antemystic mutants, and are gifted with a few superhuman traits and abilities.

Languages

English is the most widely spoken language. There is also Ateiaka, a long-forgotten indigenous language that was once spoken on the atoll, usually by practitioners of the ancient Antemystic magics.

Religion

Antemyst has declined to declare any major religion, as its citizens tend to either be atheist or follow their own beliefs, as dictated by their families. Spirituality is popular in Antemyst, with beliefs ranging just as widely.

Politics

Politics in Antemyst are largely informal, with the government enforcing only policies concerning matters which the people cannot handle themselves, such as the upkeep of the military and the occasional regulation on industry.

Economy

All of Antemyst's economy is powered by the private sector, with the government providing negligible assistance to businesses and zero welfare programs. In turn, the same private economy is almost solely produced by the planets Antemyst owns and colonizes, and the income they make from selling land on other planets in Cyrna.

Culture

Having been locked away from outside society for so long, the ancestors of the current citizenry of Antemyst created a unique culture based upon rituals, magic, and the family unit. As the nation has become more modern and worldly, this culture has begun to fade somewhat, having been replaced by technologies such as international social networking and mainstream entertainment. The efforts of several groups, including the government on rare occasions, strive to protect this disappearing culture.

Arts

Traditionally, the major art in Antemyst was Araayst (ah-RYE-st), the ancient spiritual magics, but, magic being frowned upon in much of Xaymaca and the rest of the world, the practice has nearly died out and is now considered uncouth among Antemystics. Music, dance, storytelling, and visual art have gained stronger footholds from this loss, as children turn to instruments or literature and the like instead of magic.

Antemyst has yet to produce any famous artists.
