.ko is primary domain TLD of The Kingdom of Okwe. It was introduced in 2000, to replace the original TLD .co.okw. A replacement was needed due to the decreased usage of the internet in the Kingdom in the late 1990's. This was due to the previous heavy monitoring of the internet and the monitoring of the .co.okw domain name. To attract people back to the Internet when monitoring had stopped, the .ko domain was made and branded as le choix Independent pour le demain (The Independent choice for tomorrow). This attracted millions of people back to the Internet and there was a large surge in websites registered with the .ko domain. Many government sites moved to .gov.ko and .co.okw began to fall into disuse. Despite a recent resurgence in the use of the .co.okw domain, .ko still has many more websites registered with the .ko domain name in comparison to .co.okw.
